  • Laidback dog-friendly site with sea views towards St Ives
  • By the South West Coast Path, 20 minutes’ walk from Porthtowan beach
  • Space for ball games and barbecues permitted; walk to local pubs
If your idea of living the high life is relaxing on lush, green expanses of grass with sea views, pack up your things and head straight for Porthtowan Campsite. This laidback, dog-friendly site has sea views and distant vistas of St Ives and Godrevy Lighthouse. Plus, you won’t have to dream of the sand for too long, as Porthtowan beach is only 20 minutes’ walk away along the South West Coast Path… That’s right – the South West Coast Path conveniently passes by the entrance to the site. Porthtowan beach is a welcome reward for even such a short stroll, as it has a surf shop providing lessons, surfboard hire and beach yoga, along with a beach café and a beach shop. There are three acres in total at Porthtowan Campsite. It’s a small set-up, so nice and peaceful, and barbecues are very kindly permitted for those wanting to make the most of any balmy evenings. Kids have plenty of space to look for wildlife or play ball games, as the flat meadow is surrounded by low-level stone walls. There’s also a chemical disposal point and rubbish bins. There are no other facilities on site, but the village and Rudruth, 15 minutes’ drive away, should have what you need for food and drink supplies or larger shops. Laidback, beachside Porthtowan village has two family-friendly pubs highly recommended by the site; one, 20 minutes’ walk away, has a sandy play park, sea views and serves seafood and seasonal dishes. Ask about the other spot too, which has sublime sunsets, sea views and a fab menu. In the village, there’s a well-stocked village shop, a popular fish and chip shop and an ice cream parlour - how spoilt for choice you’ll be. The beach café often hosts themed evenings and sells breakfasts, lunches, coffee and other drinks.

Local attractions

Don’t start up the car just yet, as there’s plenty to do with just your trainers or walking boots on. Set out over the South West Coast Path. Going north, it’ll guide you to St Agnes Head’s gorse and heather headland (otherwise 15 minutes’ drive) or south to Portreath (otherwise 10 minutes), which has a pretty valley and a beach popular with surfers. From Porthtowan beach (20 minutes’ walk), it’s a lovely low-tide beach stroll to stunning Chapel Porth beach. This spot, enclosed by a mining valley, is popular with those who like a wilder shore with fewer crowds. Alternatively, make your way to the larger towns of St Ives (half an hour’s drive) or Penzance (45 minutes). St Ives’ art galleries and surfing beaches have a fierce reputation. And don’t forget about the rainforest biomes of Eden Project (an hour) either…
