  • Family-friendly site on a farm surrounded by green Devon countryside
  • Westward Ho! beach 20 minutes’ drive; Exmoor National Park 55 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site with dedicated exercise area; easy access from A39
With views that extend as far as Dartmoor National Park, Ashcroft Farm is a small, dog-friendly site on a smallholding surrounded by the stunning countryside of north Devon. The surrounding fields are alive with wildlife, and birds of prey like barn owls and kestrels can frequently be spotted hunting overhead. The hedgerows, meanwhile, burst into bloom in spring and early summer, while wild songbirds will serenade you at dawn and dusk throughout the year. The site also has very low levels of light pollution, meaning that on cloudless evenings the night skies here are studded with stars. All in all, the camping area is around two acres, with the pitches situated around the border of the field, which gives kids plenty of space to play. This is a pet-friendly campsite that appreciates the importance of including the canine members of your family on camping trips. Because of that, you are welcome to build fencing around your unit, and although dogs need to be kept on a lead or tether around the site, a large field is on hand where they can run free under their owners’ supervision. Although very much in a rural location, this site is still easily accessible, as it's roughly two miles from the A39. The village of Woolfardisworthy (or Woolsery, to use its shorter name) is just over a mile away (five minutes’ drive or a 20-minute walk) and is home to a Norman church, a shop and a pub.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Quiet countryside site. Beautiful views. Great place to relax. Friendly welcome from owner. Really large pitches, with water taps adjacent to every pitch and 16amp electric (not just 5 amp) Ground accepted a peg nicely but also held them firmly. No rocks or loose sand! Grass cut short and well-maintained site. Hedges around the field with natural border, giving good shelter from most of the coastal winds. Good mobile signal on O2 network. Lovely clean toilets and showers with loads of hot water. Useful utility room with freezer, Dog-friendly but not over-run with dogs! (Separate exercise area)

Disliked: Important to be clear that we really enjoyed our time at Ashcroft Farm and wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again if travelling to the same area, but I also believe it’s important to be honest in reviews about things that might make the stay less perfect for others or where the owners can improve… There is only 1 toilet and 1 shower(which includes a toilet) for females and the same again for males. This did mean occasionally having to wait for the facilities… we didn’t find this a problem but it might have been different if we’d had younger children who couldn’t always wait for the toilet…. The showers are push-button with pre-mixed water (no temperature control). Often campsite showers are a bit cold, but we found these a bit too warm… owners could reduce their energy bills by turning the dial down a little! The approach is via narrow country lanes, so take it steady and don’t be surprised if you need to reverse occasionally!

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Loved the whole site - even in bad weather! A very warm welcome from the lady that owns and runs the site. We had a lovely pitch near to the toilets/showers/washing area which were all kept clean with plenty of hot water. It’s a small site but huge pitches and because of its size, the amount of showers was never a problem. Great dog walking field for our two Springer Spaniels. We loved that we could make a garden for our dogs although next year, we will hopefully be able to sit out more and will have them on a spike. You camp around the outside of a huge field so ideal if you have children too as plenty of space to burn off energy or ride a bike. The perfect base for exploring North Devon and not too far from the Cornwall border. Westward Ho is a short drive away and one of my favourite places to visit. On a nice day, you’ll see the best sunset from here. Northam Burrows beach which leads on from Westward Ho is so dog friendly. £6 daily for cars but you can pay for the week and it works out much cheaper. It is free after a certain time (late afternoon). Bring your chairs and a windbreaker and just enjoy the views. Supermarkets a short drive away. The perfect site for us and we won’t bother looking elsewhere again when visiting Devon, but will go directly to them. If you want rowdy then this isn’t the place for you. If you want to relax and switch off for a few days then this site is perfect.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Local attractions

The Milky Way Adventure Park (10 minutes’ drive) has both outdoor and indoor attractions, which makes it a great option for days when you can’t quite work out what the weather has in store. Highlights include a ninja obstacle course, enormous bouncing pillows and a couple of roller coasters. There are also gentle rides for younger children, plus birds of prey displays. Some of the best beaches of the north Devon coast are within a short driving distance of the site. Buck’s Mills (10 minutes) is known for its rockpools and for the waterfall tumbling down a rugged cliff, while Westward Ho! beach (20 minutes), a vast expanse of sand fringed by a ridge of pebbles, is popular with surfers. Keen hikers will not want to miss a day exploring Exmoor National Park (55 minutes), where they can walk through such diverse landscapes as moorlands and woodlands, as well as dramatic coastal paths. Keep an eye out for the local wildlife, from red deer to the resident animal gardeners, the grazing Exmoor ponies.
