  • Unfurnished bell tent on a family-run site on the Hartland Peninsula
  • Hartland Abbey five minutes’ drive; North Devon Wake Park 15 minutes
  • Sea views with dark skies at night; firepit and fairy lights provided
With lots and lots (and lots) of open fields for the kids to chase each other around or play games (not to mention lovely views of the Atlantic coastline for the parents), Little Meadow Bell Tents might well be a winner for families with their sights set on a holiday on the Hartland Peninsula. Accommodation at this peaceful and remote site on a working dairy farm in north Devon is in a bell tent sleeping up to four people. The tent is unfurnished (so you'll probably want to pack an inflatable mattress or a folding camp bed in addition to your sleeping bag), but it does come with fairy lights for atmospheric evenings sitting out in the open air (gazing at the star-studded dark sky) and an outdoor firepit so you can keep warm while doing so (and maybe grill some dinner too?) The nearest convenience store is in the village of Hartland (10 minutes’ drive), which also has a handful of restaurants and traditional pubs; head to the pretty car-free fishing village of Clovelly (15 minutes) for a seafood lunch, or to Hartland Quay (10 minutes) for a pint with dramatic views of the Atlantic and splendid sunsets. The South West Coast Path runs through Hartland Quay, and you can follow it south, to Speke’s Mill Mouth Waterfall (20 minutes on foot), or north towards the lighthouse at Hartland Point (an hour and 10 minutes). This rugged coastline has plenty of attractive corners that will stop you on your tracks. The bell tent meadow is part of a larger campsite that has a shared modern toilet and shower block, plus a washing-up area.

Local attractions

Hartland Abbey (five minutes’ drive), on the banks of the Abbey River, dates back to the 12th century and was turned into a mansion in the mid-1500s. Today, its architecture elegantly combines medieval, Georgian, Regency and Victorian elements, while its gardens are dotted with colourful wildflowers and laced with woodland paths. Kids getting restless? Take them to the Milky Way Adventure Park (10 minutes), where they can ride roller coasters, ride the dodgems and jump on huge bouncing pillows. From there, you can go to the North Devon Wake Park (15 minutes), for an inflatable adventure course on a lake and high-speed ringo rides. The landscape of the Hartland Devon Heritage Coast (15 minutes) includes granite cliffs covered with heather, dramatic formations like the Blackchurch Rock arch and small, sheltered beaches. Keep an eye out to sea during your walks, and you might spot dolphins and seals, plus puffins and kestrels flying overhead.

Bell tent

Liked: Very friendly, everything very clean and new. Very peaceful position.

Disliked: Think perhaps the glamping bell tents should be closer to the toilet/showers instead of the normal tents getting priority. But the owners did say they were changing things around next year.

Bell tent

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay at little meadow bell tents, the location was fantastic , very rural and quiet. i stayed here with 2 children. The facilities were very clean and practical, the only thing i would have to say is it would of been nicer to have toilets slightly closer to the bell tents, that's only an opinion with someone with a 3 year that needs the toilet far too often! Would definitely return, vicky was super kind and popped over for a chat also!

Disliked: toilets a bit further then i liked with small children,
