  • Small peaceful site on a private nature reserve in north Devon
  • Two miles from Bideford and within 10 minutes of award-winning beaches
  • Within easy reach of the Tarka Trail
Want to get away from the chaos of modern life without sacrificing too many of your creature comforts? At Owl Valley Glamping, a peaceful site less than two miles from the town of Bideford in north Devon, you get the best of both worlds: no internet, no electricity – just somewhere comfy to spend your break. What a hoot. Owl Valley is paradise for walkers, nature spotters and sand fans: the site is a 10-minute drive from the beach at Westward Ho! and under an hour from the north Devon coast. The 32-mile traffic-free Tarka Trail for walkers and cyclists is within easy reach, passing through nearby Bideford, and there are plenty of walks along the South West Coast Path too. Back on site, explore the private nature reserve that you’ll be calling home during your stay: wander through the woodlands, sit on the banks of the pond or stream and, at all times, keep your eyes peeled for wildflowers, butterflies, woodland birds and the occasional deer. When it's time for dinner, fire up your barbecue or get that campfire going – you can pick up supplies and essentials in Bideford, or just skip cooking altogether and have a bite at one of the quayside town’s restaurants. Don’t expect to be bingeing Netflix in the evenings – instead, kick back and turn your gaze to the stars, unwinding with the sounds of owls’ hooting and the stream running through the site playing in your ears.

Tawny cabin (hot tub)

Liked: Chris should be awarded as the best host in camping category and so as his entire family. It was the pleasure to be there, to experience peace and nature outside of busy life. There is everything a family need. The stargazing from the hot tub was amazing, just magical while still listening owls and the fast paced stream. Thanks for making this site, truly needed.

Short-Eared bell tent

Liked: This is the second time I visited with my 2 teenage boys and as at the first time I was amazing. It’s like coming to an oasis or haven from the outside crazy world. Even when approaching the little valley it feels like a place completely different from anything else around. It is absolutely peaceful, the bell tent has ample space for 4 people, is well laid out with the big bed and futons for the kids. There is nearly everything you might need. Lots of lights in the tent, extra blankets, pillows etc. the kitchen has crockery, cutlery, pots and pans. There is a great gas powered shower and the play shed is the go to area at the side with pool table, darts and lots of games. Even though the weather wasn’t that great, we had a wonderful stay. And Chris is always happy to give advice or a helping hand. We will definitely come again. As a side note, please be aware that there is basically no mobile phone reception and definitely no Wi-Fi. A real get away.

Disliked: What could you dislike in a place like this?

Barn Owl cabin (hot tub)

Liked: How helpful Chris, the owner was, always on hand to help and nothing seemed to be too much of an issue for him when it came to assisting us through out our whole stay. Off grid location - no phone signal, no electricity - perfect for our children to fully explore everything on offer without a television in sight The site is large enough that you can spend hours exploring but small enough that it isn't overwhelming for total amateurs like myself. Making camps is encouraged, which I absolutely loved! Nothing is off limits for the children and they found a real desire to explore on their own The peace and quiet, the only noises that could really be heard are that of the wildlife or laughter from others enjoying their holiday Fresh ice packs daily, as well as wood Hot tub is emptied and cleaned daily and honestly, for me, this was my favourite thing to do at any time of the day. Rope swings, hammocks, Steve's shack............ all these added little areas that the kids loved

Disliked: The fact its 6 hours away and we cannot visit every weekend

Short-Eared bell tent

Liked: The location was perfect, hidden away in a small nature reserve but yes easy to get to towns and the beaches. The site itself was well run. The tent was great, so was the shower and toilet. The camp fire and kitchen area just what we needed. The tent had lots of space. We will be back!

Disliked: Nothing

Tawny cabin (hot tub)

Liked: Hot tub, how quiet it was, enjoyed listening to the owls and the running stream of an evening. Owner was very helpful. Tawny cabin is stunning, lots of little extras for u such as logs for fire, coal on bbq and tea and coffee. Beds made up, they were really comfortable. Great family time and environment to relax.

Disliked: Nothing. Kids were disappointed at first there was no phone signal however the environment soon won them over

Local attractions

If you haven’t had enough of walking from your excursions on the South West Coast Path and Tarka Trail, never fear: Owl Valley is 40 minutes’ drive from Exmoor National Park, where there are plenty of trails and long-distance routes. There’s also canoeing, sea kayaking, fishing, horse riding and mountain biking to get stuck into, and the less active can pay a visit to Dunster Castle, take a trip on the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway funicular or the West Somerset Railway steam train, or bring the kids to Exmoor Zoo or Watermouth Castle Theme Park. For those who like living at least part of their life on the water, there’s loads to do close to Owl Valley. Have a go at kayaking, body boarding, surfing and rafting in Westward Ho!, or climb aboard a boat in Ilfracombe to spy out dolphins, seals and porpoises on sea safari. A visit to Clovelly is a must – the stunning seaside village, 20 minutes from Owl Valley, has oodles of character. It’s also entirely traffic free, so you can wander the cobbled streets sharing the roads with donkeys and human-powered sledges, and looking out over Bideford bay.
