  • Small, friendly and dog-friendly family-run site near the Devon coast
  • 15 minutes from Westward Ho! surfing beach
  • Take a boat trip, spot seals and dive off Lundy Island
Clifftop walks and river trips, rockpooling and stargazing, surf beaches and the simple pleasure of cooking up a feast with friends around a firepit… There aren't too many spots where you can tick all those boxes, but it's all there at Treyhill Farm. This comfortable and friendly smallholding is on a hilltop looking onto north Devon's finest countryside, about five minutes' drive from a pub with grub and the banks of the River Torridge. The Treyhill team know what they're about – and that's sorting everything out so you can have a truly comfy and chilled stay in these scenic surrounds. They care about the details: flowers and herbs around the grounds adding scent and colour; fresh tea towels in the washing-up station; secure bike storage for cycling types. Across the cobbled courtyard the shared bathroom is bright, clean and cosy, kitted out with a big hot shower and an armchair. You want to feast alfresco, smelling the salty tang on the breeze mingle with the woodsmoke as you sip a glass of wine? Go ahead, the folks at the farm will supply you with pots, pans, firewood and fire-starting kits… plus recipes if you need some tips on firepit cuisine. And a corkscrew. They're also mines of information on the local area and happy to help. Book ahead and they'll take you on a fish and chip run to Bideford in their boat, or cruise you down the Torridge spotting kingfishers and herons. Canine companions are welcome at Treyhill (and the same goes for the village pub).

The Bus microlodge

Liked: The bus was really cool and well kitted out (even fresh ground coffee, hot water bottle, small mirror, washing up kit) comfortable and warm - even in February. The manager was very helpful and available by phone if required. Great views, really quiet. WiFi available. Plenty of firewood available and the wood burner kept the bus really cosy and was easy to get cranked up.

Disliked: The bathroom was quite a long way from the bus. Only an issue for a wee in the night. But I gather there is a small loo on the site (near but not too near) the bus which is available in summer. We were there out of season (Feb). This wasn’t really a problem for us though. The road to the camp can be flooded and pot holed in winter - no problem in an SUV. Fairly typical and what I’d expect for country lanes in winter though but be prepared if there is a lot of rain around.

The Bus microlodge

Liked: The bus was incredible, such an awesome glamping opportunity and gave us the chance to really get off grid for a bit. Views were also amazing and the local town, Instow. was really lovely. The farm is also a fairly short drive from Croyde - which was great for coasteering, and the Bideford activity centre was really close and excellent fun for high wires and a really fun obstacle course.

Bell tent (XL)

Liked: Liked bell the tent very much It was comfortable with lots of space and well decorated. We locked the chickens and the the tree for kids to play in

Disliked: The bathrooms were clean however for 2 full bell tents, 4 tents, a bus and a camper van I’m afraid this was in adequate for the amount of people in bad weather esp little children only 2 toilets and 1 working shower Also bell tent was cold a wood burner would have made all the difference for the price Otherwise great stay

From the manager: Hello! Thank you for your feedback. We're not sure why there was only one shower working during your stay - for anyone reading this now please be assured they are all fired up and lovely and hot! As for the quantity you're right, the weather was particularly dreadful and it can make everything seem a little glummer, but I think it's worth noting for others reading this that we have successfully hosted two weddings here this summer where by brides, bridesmaids, flower girls have all used our facilities to get ready for their big day with no complaints - I guess it comes down to a matter of preference. Oh and as for a log burner in the bell tent, we did toy with the idea too but opted for safety first. Always happy to offer extra blankets if you let us know you're chilly. We're really pleased you'd love to return and stay with us however and look forward to seeing you again soon. Nikki & Tim

From the manager: Hello, and thank you for your time. We are interested to see that you've rated accommodation as 3/5 when you bought your own tent, but pleased to see you've rated the facilities we did provide as 5/5 for cleanliness - thank you! We have set our prices to reflect the fact that we are a small and more personal site than the busier, more rowdy caravan parks and sites, but we appreciate everyone has their own taste and preference. Best wishes, Nikki & Tim.

The Bus microlodge

Liked: Absolutely loved the bus! Interior was lovely, had everything we needed. All the animals were a lovely added bonus. Great hosts and had a lovely time.

Disliked: Only things my son didn’t like was not having a lock on the bus door but we wedged a log in so no one could enter so it wasn’t really a problem and he would have liked curtains at the front (I think this may be tricky to do). Wouldn’t stop us booking again, would stay again in a heartbeat.

The Bus microlodge

Liked: Most amazing views, so peaceful and quirky.. loved having everything there (kitchen, bedding, home comforts) The small details- bus steering wheel, drivers chair, the family games and books… also the kids loved seeing the chickens and allotment onsite.

Disliked: With small kids, it would have been good to have curtains for all windows, to darken it down for bed time- but with such amazing views and complete privacy I can understand why you wouldn’t want to block it. Eco toilet also a little small

Local attractions

Between the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Hartland Heritage Coast, this is true walking country. From Instow (10 minutes' drive) you can join the Tarka Trail, a wildlife-packed route inspired by the otter's journey in Henry Williamson's novel. Follow it to Westward Ho! (15 minutes from the site) and cool off in the sea; the farm owners also suggest surfers head here, instead of busier beaches further north. You can take lessons in the art of not falling off various watercraft at the Ultimate Adventure Centre in Bideford (15 minutes), while for further thrills, kayaking, laser tag and assault courses are also on the menu. For gentler times on water, head to the old riverside town of Appledore (15 minutes) for a boat cruise. If you fancy frying a fish over that firepit you can choose between the Torridge and Taw rivers as well as the big briny. Bideford is a popular launch point for sea fishing and for trips to Lundy Island: this wild outcrop in the Atlantic attracts all kinds of adventurers from seal spotters to wreck divers and has spectacular sunsets to round it all off.
