  • Family site in Dartmoor National Park, seven miles from the coast
  • A couple of minutes' walk from a 16th-century pub
  • Teign valley views; shop; high-season weekend takeaway with breakfasts
'Feral children are welcome,' say the amicable owners of Hennock Hideaways near Devon's Bovey Tracey – and so this should be a site of happy days for their well-behaved grownups too. (Dogs that can behave around livestock are most welcome here as well.) While the kids are doing endless and happily tiring laps around the Hennock camping field, the big folk can get on with what's important in life, such as sparking up a campfire then cheerfully considering where to visit next on their Devon break: Hennock Hideaways is just inside Dartmoor National Park, about seven miles from the coast and less than 10 miles from Dawlish. Sitting back with a beer and submerging oneself in the Teign valley views might be a considerably clever option from here too… The site has basic facilities including four main toilets, two hot showers and a washing-up area (you're welcome to bring your own camping shower and toilet too). In high season, an on-site takeaway opens up on weekends only, selling fresh barista-style coffee and breakfasts. Take them back to your digs if you like, or settle at the outdoor seating for food with a view. Rather take a little walk? Pay a visit to the site's pygmy goats, which guests can feed. The family-friendly atmosphere, Devon ciders, real ales, wine and well-priced pub food of the local pub, a 16th-century freehouse, a two-minute walk away; cooked breakfasts are often available here too. On site, there's also a fully stocked 24-hour honesty shop that accepts card or cash payments. In the shop, there are limited lockers which can be used to charge phones or battery packs; they can be hired for 24 hours for a small fee. The site also has a communal fridge and freezer and a couple of electric points can be used to blow up air beds. (Hennock can't take tourers or large motorhomes because of its secluded location and narrow lanes; please also be careful with wide vehicles and sports cars when approaching the site.)

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Friendly owners, good site with views across the valley. Owners were nice and welcoming. Site is a little hilly so be careful where you pitch. 2 standalone toilet sheds and 2 other toilet rooms with showers also. Showers were clean and tidy. Hot water in the washing up shed wasn’t working for 2 of the days, which turned back on again after this. Small honesty shop is useful as well as communal fridge/freezer. Local pub only 2 min walk away and can use owners drive to walk down and access. Pub food is brilliant. Got breakfast served on sat/sun mornings for £7.50 which was well worth it and tasty.

Disliked: Site was very busy on Saturday morning so chose not to use them. The site could do with a couple of extra showers.

Liked: Had a fantastic stay at Hennock Hideaways, such a beautiful spot and so peaceful! The stars were amazing and facilities everything we needed. Loved the fire pits, a great little addition that makes it so cosy up there! Incredible views and a lovely spot to spend the day relaxing too. Will definitely be back, we only live 30 mins away so an easy, simple spot to camp when we fancy a change.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Small but perfectly formed. The views across the moors are breathtaking. The facilities are really well thought out. The addition of a kettle (and microwave, communal fridge and freezer) within the honesty shop is genius. It means you have your morning coffee within a few minutes rather than waiting all that time for your kettle to boil. There are two showers but they are more like bathrooms. A wonderful honesty shop that has the added bonus of being able to pay online and is so reasonably priced. On a weekend, breakfasts and evening take away are available. I highly recommend this wonderful place and we’ll definitely be back.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Amazing views, good play areas, use of fridge/freezer, honesty shop and charging lockers a bonus! Free fire pit. Delicious breakfast rolls.

Disliked: Very narrow roads. Need more showers and loos especially when site is busy, both a little tired and showers can be a little temperamental!! Very busy and noisy the evening before we left with too many people camping very close to other campers and driving much too fast on site. Having to take landfill rubbish home!! Didn't see owners to say hello during our stay.

From the manager: Thanks for your feedback - Im afraid the roads across the countryside of Devo are narrow, if you follow the directions, that brings you to us the easiest way. Google has a habit of directing everyone to the worst roads. We had a very busy bank holiday so our showers and loos were busy. We have capped numbers now to ensure our facilities our enough. We re-vamp every year and end of August is nearing the end of season so things can get tired, but we do check and clean daily and fix ASAP where required. We don't ask anyone to take rubbish home. we have recycling bins for every type of rubbish and a bin for nappies and doggie matters which goes to landfill. Food, plastics, paper , cardboard, cans and glass can all be recycled here. We don't accept broken camping equipment though, which is what our signs refer to and explain. "Love not landfill" Sorry we didn't see you, although I'm not sure how as we cook the breakfasts, clean the loos, live here and clean and check all facilities every day! Bank holidays do bring another type of visitor which don't always follow the rules, we do have a max 5mph on site. We also require campers to camp 6 metres apart. For £10 per night, we believe we provide an awesome space, vibe and site, with amazing views and lots we don't charge for.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Highly recommend. Children loved it as they could play freely with other children camping. The view is breathtaking and can pitch anywhere in the field. Highlight was the communal fridge and freezer and could recharge phone for the next day trip. They also had a honesty shop open 24hr. You can pay online. That was very clever and easy. The camp was so central, easy access to Exmouth Beach and the national park. The first time going up the country lanes uphill was a little scary but once you do it everyday, you get use to it and get to know which roads are wider. Did not put me off.We will come back..

Disliked: Nothing.

Liked: The site was clean and open. Loved having firepits/baskets provided for us to use. The facilities were kept clean. Great little honesty shop. Trampolines and small par for the kids to play. Wild meadow on sloping part of the field. Make sure you take heavy duty pegs and mallet. Our friend had trouble with hers as ground stoney after a few inches down.

Local attractions

Hennock Hideaways is only two miles from the A38 so has easy access to many Devon attractions inland and down towards the south coast (feel free to tackle the north Devon coast too: it's less than two hours away). Very close by, a local park is in Hennock village and three reservoirs are within a mile or two, one of which is a trout fly fishery. Pike fishing and boat hire are also available. Two miles away is Bovey Tracey with shops, a few more pubs, takeaways and a craft centre along with a pretty park with walks by the River Teign. And talking of walks... the letterboxing, hikes and tor-to-tor walks of Dartmoor are very close to base; small sorts heading here can also ride Dartmoor ponies. The south Devon coast of seaside town Teignmouth is about seven miles away: follow the coastal road from here to Torbay and then Brixham, where you can see the Hennock Hideaways' own fishing trawler the Katy Jane.
