Foam fans, you're going to be stoked at this. Walking On Waves Surf Camp is closer to the beach than any other site in Croyde – how swell. Boarding in the bell tents here will have surfers a pebble throw from Croyde Beach, less than five minutes' walk from Croyde village, and a 25-minute stroll to more breaking waves at Saunton Sands. Don't have any kit or have never dipped your toes in foamy surf before? Fret not, as Walking on Waves can sort all surfing abilities from absolute beginners to all season board riders, whether it's introducing guests to the waves for the first time, improving riding skills or fundamentally rebuilding skills in all things surf. When you're dropping in back at base, you'll find a communal dining tent with gas griddles, an indoor heated pool and two restaurants and two bars to swap surf stories at. Sky Sports for all rugby and football matches is in the Plaza bar. Walking on Waves also has hot showers, toilets, a food shop and free wifi.

Local attractions

You'll probably be in the water most of the time if you're staying at Walking On Waves Surf Camp, either at Croyde or at the other nearby top Devon surf spot of Saunton Sands. Backed by the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Braunton Burrows, Saunton is a long straight and sandy beach within 25 minutes' walk of base and is popular with surfers and families because of its long stretch of water and sand. Walk to Crow Point from here for some spectacular Devon coastline views, or hike the South West Coast Path the four and a half coastal miles back to the beach at Croyde. Also have a wander around the shops and cafés of Croyde and its neighbouring Devon seaside villages, or shoot up to the coast for more surfing at Woolacombe and Ilfracombe. Inland, stroll or pedal part of the 180-mile Tarka Trail (pick it up at nearby Braunton), or mosey along for a few days of outdoorsy pursuits within a short drive in Exmoor.
