  • Dog-friendly, off-grid site in rural Devon surrounded by native woods
  • A 20-minute drive from Bude’s beaches and half an hour to Dartmoor
  • Communal space for cooking on a gas stove; walk into Holsworthy
Time to get off the grid… Gypsy Wagon Devon is a back to basics break set within remote glades on the edge of a native woodland and surrounded by wildflowers. This is a chance to relax and have a down-to-earth time in rural Devon – just don’t forget your wellies, people. A 20-minute drive from Bude’s north Cornwall beaches and conveniently surrounded by the west Devon countryside, there’s lots to like about the location. The small market town of Holsworthy is half an hour’s stroll away if you’d like to go shopping and there are plenty of choices for eating out at pubs and restaurants both in the town and the surrounding villages (foodies will be pleased with that situation, surely). Listen out for owls or the songbirds’ dawn chorus, which starts at daybreak. You might get lucky and spot a deer too. In terms of facilities, the site has a small hut made entirely from reclaimed materials. It houses a solar camping shower and a separate toilet cubicle with a camping toilet. There’s also an open-sided area with space for cooking on a gas camping stove and washing up dirty dishes, so appoint a designated chef pronto. If you don’t fancy cooking for yourself, just sample some of the grub at the many local pubs or takeaways. Dogs are welcome on site by prior arrangement (just add them as a guest, please, otherwise you’ll need to pay an additional fee upon arrival). There are boarding kennels on site for an additional cost if you need to leave your dog behind on days out. There’s no wifi but there is a reasonable 4G and mobile phone signal on most networks.

Local attractions

With the countryside sorted at your base, that leaves the Devon coast for you to visit. Bude’s surfing beaches (20 minutes’ drive) are a grand chance to get stuck into the ocean froth; if you’re not a huge appreciator of dips in open sea, there’s also a semi-natural sea pool for gentler soaks. You can also take in the scenes at Water Cove Beach (20 minutes) from the clifftop trails, perhaps picking yourself a suitable spot on the golden sand as you survey from above. Another spot with especially gorgeous sea views is Tintagel Castle (45 minutes). There’s a beach below the castle where wizard Merlin is supposed to have lived, and Arthurian legends are just as common in the main castle grounds over the drawbridge. Get to know a little more about the rumoured witches and wizards of the past at the Boscastle (35 minutes). That’ll give you a break between hikes in Dartmoor National Park (half an hour) and watersports at Upper Tamar Lake (20 minutes).
