  • Cosy secluded shepherd's hut in a rural spot near Holsworthy
  • A 10-minute drive to Tamar Lakes; 20 minutes to the beach at Bude
  • Private outdoor area with barbecue, firepit and pizza oven
Devon or Cornwall? Cornwall or Devon? Have yourselves a good slice of both by staying at Tolverne Shepherd’s Hut – this cosy little glamping hut is actually in Devon, but it’s very close to the border between the two counties, allowing you to roam around the best of both as you wish. This rural location is about 10 minutes’ drive from the market town of Holsworthy, and the hut is set in its own lovely field surrounded by trees and with far-reaching views towards Dartmoor National Park. It’s all got a splendidly secluded vibe, with the hut reached via a path from the private parking area and set in its own space with a decked seating area that’s got a firepit, barbecue and pizza oven for all your alfresco feasts. Inside, the stylish hut has lots of cute little decor details, and has been cleverly designed to encompass all the bits you need for a comfortable stay. That includes a fixed double bed (with storage underneath), a bathroom with shower and toilet, and a kitchen area with two-ring hob, combi oven and fridge. The whole thing is kept cosy with a woodburning stove; firewood is provided, as are towels and bed linen, to help you keep your packing list short. Don’t get too comfortable, though, because there’s plenty to keep you busy in the surrounding area, including trips to the north Cornwall coast, activities at Tamar Lakes and expeditions in Dartmoor National Park. There are also a couple of pubs 10 minutes’ drive away if you’re after a more chilled-out kind of outing.

Local attractions

If Cornwall’s all about the coast for you, you’ll be in a good spot here – perhaps you’d like to hit the surf waves in Bude (20 minutes’ drive) or take a walk through the Hartland Cornwall Heritage Coast (25 minutes). And Devon’s north coast is just as fabulous, with top picks including the cobbled streets of Clovelly (half an hour) and the sands of Westward Ho! (35 minutes). There are lots of great walks along the South West Coast Path too, of course, or down in Dartmoor National Park (40 minutes). For more active days out, head to the watersports centre at Tamar Lakes (10 minutes) or try out wakeboarding and the floating assault course at North Devon Wake Park (25 minutes). Other outings nearby might take you on a tour of the Cornish Distilling Company (15 minutes), for a round at Ivyleaf Golf Course & Driving Range (20 minutes) or to explore the past at Davidstow Airfield and Cornwall at War Museum (35 minutes).
