Eden? It doesn't get much more 'back to basics' than that… As the name suggests, Eden Camping is an excellent choice for those looking to pitch up in a modern-day Arcadian idyll: green pastures, indigenous woodlands, a spring and – perhaps most appropriately – an orchard make up the scenery at this pleasant south Devon site, which has the added attraction of being a mere 10-minute drive from the nearest beach. 'Sounds great', you'll be thinking, 'but wasn't there some kind of a catch with the whole garden utopia thing?' Not so at Eden Camping, where none of the tasty smallholding-produced food you buy from the on-site shop will come with a side serving of divine wrath – this, after all, is an all-organic affair, making such nasty side effects pretty near impossible… With your tastebuds warmed up by site-produced food, you could venture away from base for a drink or slap-up meal at the nearest pub (20 minutes' walk), or stay close to home and set up a barbecue instead. The facilities here include well-maintained toilets and solar showers; for a small fee the site staff can also recharge any gadgets that are out of juice. If you need a proper supermarket, Kingsbridge (15 minutes' drive) has a handful of them, plus takeaways, markets and a narrow-gauge railway.

Local attractions

As it's surrounded by the sea on several sides, this part of the south Devon countryside has a fair few show-stopping beaches you'll want to get out to. East Portlemouth beach (20 minutes' drive) is a super sandy spot, with clear blue water and views over the seaside town of Salcombe (25 minutes from site); for bonus points, there's a ferry that connects both sides of the water. Or would you rather lounge at Gara Rock beach (20 minutes), a slightly more rugged spot surrounded by dramatic cliffs and coast path trails? If you're feeling particularly adventurous, you could also head out to remote Moor Sand (a mile from Gara Rock), which is only accessible by footpath. More family-friendly attractions in the area include Dartmouth Castle (35 minutes), whose medieval walls make a nice contrast with the 1920s architecture on display at Coleton Fishacre House (an hour and 10 minutes). Fancy peering into Cornwall? Get yourself to Plymouth (an hour) and spy out boats bobbing along the Cornish coast from atop its Royal Citadel. On your way downhill into the city centre, you might also feel like stopping at the city's aquarium to see what's swimming in its huge glass tanks.
