  • Cosy shepherd's hut in the rural west of Devon
  • Tavistock 20 minutes' drive; 40 minutes to Boscastle
  • Farm produce sold, including jams, chutneys, eggs, bread and scones
Set among the green countryside of the rural west of Devon, Farmer Oak's Hut is a welcoming glamping site tucked away in the corner of a peaceful field. Swap your car for an old-fashioned apple cart and cart your kit over to this smart shepherd's hut for a peaceful stay in a private enclosed garden. Although the name of the hut is inspired by the protagonist of 'Far from the Madding Crowd', this shepherd's hut in Dippertown near Okehampton has a good deal more mod cons than the one in Hardy's novel (there's deliberately no TV or wifi, though – this place was designed for switching off). The hut has an ensuite shower room with your own fluffy towels and a comfy double bed with fairy lights and lanterns for you to create a romantic atmosphere. An Everhot electric stove stove is available for those chillier nights, and for food prep you're covered with a toaster, fridge, microwave and two-ring electric hob. There are also outdoor kitchen facilities, with enamel cups and plates as well as pots and pans you can use over the firepit. In the garden, a wooden table, benches and traditional deckchairs are available, and there's a covered area for shade or shelter from the rain. In the field, a short distance from the hut, there's a little store where you can buy homemade jams, chutneys, marmalade and fresh eggs; the owners also can supply you with fresh bread to order and scones for that must-have Devon cream tea.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Wonderful location tranquil and peaceful just what we wanted. We had a lovely welcome from the owners along with a Devonshire Cream Tea. The Farmers Oak's Hut was very well equipped with a lot of attention to detail. Clean and comfortable. A really enjoyable two nights stay.

Local attractions

This part of Devon has plenty for visitors to explore, from Tavistock (20 minutes' drive) and its far-famed panier market to Launceston Castle (20 minutes), a ruined English Heritage fortress with a 13th-century keep. Both Tavistock and Launceston are also popular centres for shopping, with a good spread of boutiques and independent shops; if you want to visit bigger outlets, Plymouth can be reached in about 50 minutes. Dartmoor National Park begins approximately seven miles from site in Lydford (15 minutes), home to a castle and a pretty gorge with a 30-metre waterfall. The National Park has plenty of opportunities for hiking, as does Bodmin Moor (20 minutes), a remote expanse of countryside that can be reached along the main road in about 20 minutes. For a day by the coast, you could head to the sandy beaches of north Cornwall at Bude (45 minutes) or Boscastle (40 minutes). Alternatively, stay inland for fishing at Roadford Lake (15 minutes) or exploring the five major National Trust properties within a 30-mile radius.
