  • Pick your own pitch at a Devon pop-up site with coastal views
  • Bovisand beach five minutes' drive; central Plymouth 20 minutes
  • Views over Plymouth Sound; South West Coast Path 0.25 miles
Pick your own pitch and get a load of the local landscape at Drakes View, a basic pop-up site in Devon with spectacular views over Plymouth Sound. Located just 20 minutes' drive to the east of the city centre near the small village of Bovisand (and five minutes' drive from Bovisand beach), Drakes View is all about keeping it simple. No flashy facilities or complicated set-up here: just a small number of grass pitches without toilets, showers or waste-disposal facilities (essentials like water are taken care of, though). After gazing out over the cliffs and coves that make this part of Devon's coastline so scenic, you can head out for strolls along the South West Coast Path a quarter of a mile from the site, or amble through the green countryside of the nearby South Hams, where all sorts of footpaths lie in wait. It's not all about the scenery, though. This site is also a practical option, being within a mile and a half of pubs, cafés and the various facilities around Plymouth Yacht Haven. Getting around by public transport is possible at Drakes View too, as this well-connected site is just under a mile from a local bus stop.

Liked: The view

Disliked: There are no facilities here and there is an ongoing feud between the site owner and the golf club right next door. Our gas wasn't firing and we weren't able to have a hot shower. When we asked the Golf Club manager if we could pay to use their showers he said a flat no- due to the dispute with the campsite owner. We felt the golf manager was missing a trick to make money and in the process wasn't sympathetic to our situation simply because he doesn't get on with campsite owner.

From the manager: There is no feud. I think perhaps you may have spoken to the wrong person. However the golf club showers are quite rightly for the paying golf club members only. However you can use the toilets if you are spending money in the golf club Bar / Restaurant. We do advertise there are no facilities here. All this occurred because your gas wasn't firing. No one else's fault. Hope you liked the fireworks at least. Cheers.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The view and location was good

Disliked: No toilets to use no running water the grass was hard to get the tent pegs into and no reception to meet or anything. Only good for caravans

From the manager: Hello we have lots of tents and plenty of drinking water from the two taps on site. I can't help the hard ground there is a bit of a drought on atm. We do advertise no facilities however there is a golf club next door with a bar and restaurant open to the public. Sorry if you did not enjoy your stay with us. Cheers.

Local attractions

With the coast so close by, it’s only natural that the beach might be your first port of call, but which cove first? Well, there’s splendid swimming (and snorkelling if you’ve got the gear for it) at Bovisand beach (five minutes' drive) or kitesurfing and windsurfing activities at the stunning sandy beach at Bigbury-on-Sea (40 minutes) will give you some top views of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In Plymouth, paddles might come in the form of a trip to the saltwater Tinside Lido (20 minutes) in the harbour… relax on the sun deck afterwards or take yourself off into central Plymouth (20 minutes) for shopping in the Barbican’s historic quarter or the bigger shopping centre. With Dartmoor Zoo (25 minutes) for animal fans and the National Trust’s Saltram Park (15 minutes) for cycles on the grounds of a Georgian mansion, there are lots of activities for all types of tastes. Dartmoor National Park (25 minutes) has a splendid combo too, this time of valleys, moorlands and the river Dart, so take out a canoe or cycle along the many trails around the national park.
