  • Glamping on a working Dartmoor hill farm
  • Half a mile to Princetown; 45 minutes' drive to the south Devon coast
  • Within walking distance of cafés and a national park visitor centre
Relax and unwind in the peace and quiet of the Devon countryside at Dartmoor Glamping, a smart glamping site set on a working Dartmoor hill farm. Tucked away in a private location in the wooded part of the site owners' large garden, the accommodation here will be just the job if you're looking for a relaxed rural break in the West Country. There's a lot to like about the bell tent accommodation on offer here. Each unit comes with comfy mattresses, warm duvets and snuggly pillows, while fairy lights add a touch of sparkle after dark as you listen out for the owls or spend time gazing up at the stars. A private field kitchen is available, and there's a separate WC and gas-fired shower with a hand basin and mirror too. Dartmoor Glamping is located about half a mile from the village of Princetown, where there's a handful of cafés, a visitor centre for Dartmoor National Park and access to a footpath along a former railway line for strolls and cycles through the countryside.

Local attractions

Dartmoor Glamping is right in the centre of Dartmoor National Park – a great place to experience all the sights, sounds and smells of the countryside. Hiking routes and cycle rides crisscross the countryside for miles around – ask site staff for recommendations, then head to the visitor centre in the village to pick up maps. This isolated location also explains why Dartmoor Prison is also located here (five minutes' drive). The prison has a museum about its 200-year history just next door for any curious passers-by. It's also a short journey to lots of historic National Trust properties and classic English gardens. Buckland Abbey (20 minutes) near Yelverton is a very pretty spot for walks and a cream tea, while heading south towards Plymouth will bring you to Cotehele and Cotehele Mill (40 minutes) in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Visits to the coast are also possible from here, as Dartmoor Glamping is about 45 minutes by road from beaches like Bovisand and Wembury. Slightly further afield, you can reach the South Hams Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (an hour), and jaunts to Cornwall may also be on the cards – resorts like Looe (an hour) and Port Isaac (an hour and 15 minutes) are both doable as day trips.

Buttercup bell tent

Liked: Camp kitchen was excellent, especially in the wet. Toilet and shower just for us, not sharing. Beds were really comfy and bedding was provided. Excellent location, on the clear night the stars were amazing.

Counting Sheep shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked: Cabin was nice, lovely location, nicely fitted out.

Disliked: No wood provided for the hot tub. The owner insisted she light the hot tub at the time of her choosing sometime in the afternoon. She never told us when it might happen and refused to give us wood to light ourselves. We had one reasonable hot tub on Saturday morning after asking the host specially and she insisted on lighting the the burner with coal and lots of parafin. We had the added pleasure of the local farmers watching us get in and out as the hot tub isn’t screened from the road and passers by.

From the manager: So sorry you were not happy with your Hot tub experiance, it is the first time we have had any complaints about the tub being lit and hot when people get back from a day out. I think that we were not compatable - We have never had a bad review. I am glad that you liked the hut, I did not refuse to give you wood, if you had said you would rather light it yourself I would gladly have given up the job - I thought I was giving you good service - you can not see the tub from the lane, did you check it out, you can see the lane from the tub, but you are higher when in the tub. I wish you had bought your complaint to us before leaving and we could have sorted out the problem very easily. Your photos are not very flattering, not sure why you needed to post a photo of the box we keep the tub lighting bits in?? If you would like your dirty clothes back that you left by the tub, please contact me with your address and I will gladly forward them to you at no cost. I have ditched the dirty knickers. P. S we mostly have return guests which we love dearly and are happy to have the tub lit with smokeless fuel bricks and lighting fuel to get it going then with locally souced wood from wind blown trees on the farm.

Counting Sheep shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked: My son and his partner are both university students and they needed to get away from the city. They thought about camping up on Dartmoor but it was freezing - so I booked them two nights in this amazing shepherd's hut as a gift. I collected them from the bus stop and drove them up to the site. I was very impressed. The cabin was warm, cosy, clean and set in its own surroundings with a gate. There was a wood-burning hot tub just outside the shepherds hut that was nearly new, clean and boiling hot! The shepherd's hut and hot tub were sent amongst trees and flowers and at night they got to sit in the hot tub and watch the stars! And being out on Dartmoor on a clear night they were in for a treat. The host was very friendly but left them to themselves but she was in the main-house if they needed anything. She had also put some supplies into the fridge for them. I would highly recommend this cabin, location and host. Rachel Bolton
