  • Simple pitches on five acres of a working dairy farm
  • Two miles from the coast; 10 minutes' drive to Clovelly
  • Dog-friendly site with farm tours; village five minutes' drive away
Ready to trade the trappings of modern life for fresh air, stunning views and starry night skies? Wend your way to West Welsford Wild Camping for all of this in a splendid location in the Hartland Heritage Coast area, close to the Devon/Cornwall border and a five-minute drive from the village amenities of Hartland. A couple of miles from the coast and with grounds adjoining Bursdon Moor (an area well-known for its birdwatching), this is a particularly fine spot for hikers and wildlife spotters. Friendly owners Chris and Tracey want their guests to see as much as possible of the gorgeous coastline, so they offer drop-offs and pick-ups for those heading out for coast path walks. It’s a back-to-basics setup here, with just the essentials covered (toilets and washing-up facilities, plus drinking water provided on arrival). There’s plenty of space to spread out around the five-acre plot, but the highlight here surely has to be the splendid views… by day you can look out over the rural surroundings all the way to the sea (with Lundy Island visible on a clear day), and by night there’s often a fine display of stars. West Welsford is a working dairy farm, so you’ll need to abide by the countryside code and keep dogs on leads on the farm and in the surroundings. If you’d like to get to know a bit more about life on a dairy farm, Chris and Tracey are usually happy to organise a farm tour and show you such things as the robotic milking kit and the modern methods of slurry collecting.

Local attractions

Having spotted the sea from afar on site, no doubt you’ll want to get down to the shore as soon as possible. It’s a couple of miles to the South West Coast Path from the farm, with some local highlights being Hartland Quay, Speke’s Mill Mouth Waterfall and the cute little seaside village of Clovelly – all are about 10 minutes’ drive away (and make sure to stop by at elegant Hartland Abbey en route too). For proper sandy beaches, you’ll want to head to stunning Sandymouth Bay or Duckpool Bay (both 20 minutes’ drive away) or make a beeline for Bude (also 20 minutes) and its surf waves and surf schools. Heading in the other direction, it’s a 25-minute drive to Westward Ho! In between all of these are plenty of places to get out for a scenic hike on the coast path. Thrills of a different variety are on hand at The Milky Way Adventure Park (10 minutes) and The BIG Sheep (20 minutes), which has all sorts of cute creatures to meet as well as rides and other family attractions.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: It was amazing! Owner is so welcoming and helpful! We stayed for 4 nights, on the first 2 it was rather windy weather, the owner came and checked on us and reassured us that if we needed anything he would be more than happy to help! This was our first experience doing wild camping, and this was definitely a welcoming and beautiful stay. The view is absolutely incredible! Definitely recommend!

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: The campsite was the first stop of our devon/cornwall holidays. The owner Tracey was unbelievable helpful. She made us feel well and helped us organizing our one week on the south west coast path trip. She helped us parking our car and dropped us at the starting point of our tour. We had nice and profound conversations with her. * very simple, but calm and friendly campsite * close to Hartland * perfect starting point for coast path walks

Lexi 1 bedroom on-site touring caravan

Liked: Peaceful, quiet, we rented the static caravan which was great as you could shelter from cold and rain during night, just bring your duvet or two. Not much other in it which is reflected in price. Public toilets didn't smell bad, location is 15min drive to coast for some amazing cliff walks. Sunset can be seen from campsite.
