  • Luxury couples' getaway on the edge of a secluded private lake
  • On the edge of Dartmoor, 15 minutes' drive from Devon's south coast
  • Barbecue and pizza oven on the lakeside deck; hot tub to hire
If your idea of true luxury is a swathe of stunning scenery, peace and space rather than a pile of shiny gadgets, you’ll no doubt be delighted with the gorgeous retreat at The Lakehouse. As the name suggests, this fabulous Devon cabin sits right on the edge of a natural lake, in a private location surrounded by woodland. This secluded spot makes a wonderful location for a special break for two (although as it’s a rural location, you may be joined by visitors including geese and sheep from time to time…) Everything here has been set up to create the idea of ‘rustic luxury’ – inside there’s a log fire, a kitchen, a TV and DVD player, a private bathroom and a splendid kingsize bed. Several little extra touches are thrown in too, like gowns and slippers, plus a welcome pack that includes the site’s very own craft gin. It’s likely that you’ll want to be outside as much as possible though – the cabin opens out onto a stunning lakeside deck that’s got a gas-fired barbecue and an outdoor pizza oven, plus the option to hire a hot tub for the ultimate alfresco evening. You’re welcome to take a dip in the lake too if you like, but please do so sensibly and don’t go in if you’re not a strong swimmer or under the influence (the lakeside setting also means this cabin isn’t suitable for children). You’ll feel well, well away from the crowds here, but in fact you’ll be rather well located for exploring Devon – you can be in the wilds of Dartmoor with a drive of five minutes, or drive for 15 minutes to get to the coast or to Totnes.

Local attractions

There are lots of lovely things to see around Dartmoor, and you can explore them on trails ranging from short strolls to lengthy hilly rambles. Ugborough Beacon (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place to start for an elevated view, before heading on to Haytor Rocks (25 minutes), Burrator Reservoir (35 minutes) and Lukesland Gardens (15 minutes). A golf course, horse riding centre and fishing lake are all close by too. The sweet town of Totnes (15 minutes) is a good place to pick up supplies in the independent shops. You can also have a go at kayaking or paddleboarding from the town, stop in to explore the Dartington Estate just outside the town or take a ride on the South Devon Railway. And of course, there’s always the option of the Devon coast – from the Lakehouse it’s a 25-minute drive to Bigbury-on-Sea for a trip to Burgh Island, half an hour to Salcombe and Dartmouth or 35 minutes to Blackpool Sands.
