  • Tucked-away shepherd's hut on a farm 10 minutes’ drive from Dorchester
  • A 20-minute drive to Weymouth and the Cerne Abbas Giant
  • Barbecues allowed; shops and pubs 10 minutes’ drive
Looking for a peaceful shepherd's hut adventure on a Dorset working farm? One where you can unwind in the lovely countryside? Step forward Troytown Farm, where there is a tucked-away shepherd's hut just 10 minutes’ drive from the historic county town of Dorchester. Well-maintained, small and family friendly, this site's rural location is splendid. Tucked away on a quiet corner of the farm, the shepherd's hut overlooks pasture where you may well see sheep grazing, and there’s ancient woodland to explore beyond the fields. Less than a mile away is Puddletown forest, a walker's haven which has some of the best views of the local area. It's home to rare insects, nesting birds and miles of well-maintained trails. If you want to get the barbecue going (bring your own from home), pick up tasty morsels from Dorchester supermarkets or delis to grill. Should you fancy a break from cooking, several traditional Dorset cider pubs are within 10 minutes’ drive. About the same distance away are golf courses and museums – the Dorset Teddy Bear Museum may become a firm favourite with the kids. Exploring a bit further afield, you can be on Weymouth beach in 20 minutes’ drive. On site, the water is not suitable for drinking, so bottled water is advised for drinking, brushing teeth and washing fruit and vegetables.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Easy to find, nice grass pitch's however they did sightly slop toward the hedge so may need your ramps. Overlooks fields and trees and very quiet. We cycled into Puddletown which was about 1 mile to the pub. Not best suited to walk. It was about 2.5 miles to Athelhampton House which we drove to because it was raining otherwise we would have cycled there.

Disliked: sloping pitch's. and not much within walking distance,

Liked: Lovely views and a bonus of sheep and Augustus the alpaca as neighbours. The hut was immaculately clean with a lovely bathroom, kitchen and very comfortable bed. The host Sarah was very friendly and accommodating. If you are looking for a basic site with a stunning hut and fire pit look no further. Get booking!

Local attractions

Don the walking boots and step out into the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (10 minutes’ drive) for family rambles, or cycle bike routes that take in Corfe Castle (25 minutes’ by bike) and riverside Wareham (an hour and a half). For seaside hikes, have a mooch along the shingle at Chesil Beach (half an hour’s drive) on the spectacular Jurassic Coast, or hit the South West Coast Path at Bowleaze Cove (20 minutes) for more challenging rambles along the clifftops. To mix up outdoor exercise with some sneaky history lessons for the kids, head for the mysterious – possibly Saxon – figure of the Cerne Abbas Giant (20 minutes) straddling the hillside, or hike up to the circular Iron Age fort at Maiden Castle (15 minutes). Fast-forward several millennia to see the Osmington White Horse (25 minutes), originally carved into the hillside in 1808. Beaches may well be a priority for family day trips, with bucket-list spots including the sliver of sand at horseshoe-shaped Lulworth Cove (half an hour), or the long sandy strip at Weymouth (20 minutes), with its child-friendly sand sculptures and funfair.
