  • Back-to-basics campsite in rural Dorset, near Wimborne Minster
  • Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door 50 minutes’ drive; Go Ape 10 minutes
  • Views of Horton Tower on site: bus and shops 10 minutes’ drive
This is wild camping as it should be… a field, some tents and a splendid view. Dean Meadow Camping is a tiny and straightforward pop-up site surrounded by the rolling fields of Dorset, with views to the historic Horton Tower from the pitches. Simple facilities stretch to a composting toilet, ensuring that you have an entirely sustainable holiday. Please be aware that there is no electricity or water on site, so come prepared with torches, bottled water and bring your own barbecues too. The nearest town is Wimborne Minster (10 minutes’ drive), a traditional English market town with plenty of independent shops handy for picking up supplies, and offering a choice of welcoming pubs and restaurants if you’re not feeling the urge to cook on site. Heading to the beach? Branksome Chine (30 minutes) is the nearest sandy spot to Dean Meadow, but a stay at Dean Meadow puts you close to some of Britain’s best beaches along the Jurassic Coast, plus famous landmarks like Old Harry Rocks, Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove (all 50 minutes).

Local attractions

As well as planning beach days with the kids, they might enjoy helping out with the feeding of enormous Shire horses at Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park (10 minutes’ drive), or for more exotic wildlife encounters, hearing all about the rescued primates at Monkey World - Ape Rescue Centre (35 minutes). Younger children can enjoy tractor rides at Farmer Palmer’s Farm Park (half an hour). For active days out, wear the kids out on cycle rides in Moors Valley Country Park and Forest (10 minutes) – and if that doesn’t work, let them loose on the treetop climbing courses at Go Ape Moors Valley. If you’re inclined towards a bit of heritage tourism, tour lavish apartments in the ornate mansion at the National Trust's Kingston Lacy estate (15 minutes). Head to Poole (half an hour) to see the tall ships moored up along the historic waterfront or take a boat trip from the quayside to Brownsea Island (55 minutes) for woodland walking trails and views of Poole Harbour.
