  • Scenic countryside site 30 minutes’ drive from Jurassic Coast beaches
  • A 15-minute drive from Poole, 30 minutes from Dorchester, Bournemouth
  • Ramblers’ paradise on an extensive footpath network
Keen on quiet back-to-basics stays in peaceful countryside, with beautiful views and lots to do nearby? Make immediate tracks for Plough Point Farm, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from Poole in Dorset. The rural spot is well placed for rambling days along country lanes with a widespread network of footpaths criss-crossing the area, including a roughly half-hour saunter into the nearby village of Lytchett Matravers, where there’s a local supermarket, a library with wifi access and two pubs – The Chequers and The Rose & Crown. Not a lengthy enough wander? The 630-mile South West Coast Path starts 15 minutes away in Poole, putting scenic hikes and perambulations along the spectacular Jurassic Coast within easy reach. And if lazier coastal days are preferred, it’s about half an hour to Studland beach for swims, kayaking, sandcastle building and soaking up the rays (should the British weather allow). A bit of advanced preparation may be required for stays at Plough Point – there’s washing water, but no drinking water, for instance – but the pay-off may be worth it… The pretty site has stunning views over fields towards Poole Harbour, and visits from foxes, badgers, deer and Dorset buzzards are fairly common, plus there’s very little light pollution, so evenings spent stargazing are absolute musts.

Local attractions

Proximity to Poole should put it top of the to-do list during stays… It’s 15 minutes’ drive to the Dorset seaside town, where museums open the door to the past (and to pretty walled gardens), luck can be tested at the casino, peaceful afternoons can be had with leisurely floats on the boating lake, and higher-octane days are within reach at Splashdown Waterpark. Less controlled watery days are a cinch too, with a ferry crossing from Poole to Brownsea Island, the National Trust-managed nature reserve in Poole Harbour, where there’s birdwatching and wildlife spotting, lots of trails to follow, and an open-air theatre when something a little more cultural appeals. If Poole’s museums sparked interest in history-filled adventures, there’s plenty else hereabouts to entertain: within 20 minutes, Bovington Tank Museum offers a glimpse into armoured warfare since World War I, the stunning Kingston Lacy is ready for explores, Hardy’s Cottage gives an insight into the early writings of Thomas Hardy, and the medieval falconry and quests of Corfe Castle await. For more urban days, Bournemouth and Dorchester are both about half an hour away. Visit the former for seven miles of sandy beaches and an aquarium, and the latter for the Tutankhamun exhibition and Terracotta Warrior museum, plus loads more.
