  • Self-contained shepherd’s hut in Maiden Newton, Dorset
  • A 20-minute drive to Dorchester; 25 minutes to Weymouth beach
  • Glamping pod with woodburner and firepit, close to the Frome river
Based in peaceful Dorset countryside, Acres Meadow’s cleverly designed shepherd’s hut overlooks the Frome river in the village of Maiden Newton. This natty little glamping pod makes a cosy retreat for families and couples looking for rural mini-breaks. Heated by a woodburner (with wood and kindling supplied free of charge), the hut has simple wooden fittings, a comfy living space and cleverly incorporated bunk and double beds. Outside there’s a firepit ready and waiting for to you barbecue on (pick up bits and pieces in the handy village stores) or just warm your toes of an evening. Acres Meadow is a cracking base for discovering Dorset. There are olde-worlde thatched villages nearby, market towns and prehistoric monuments to explore, and it's not far to busy seaside towns with lots of nightlife action. Dorchester is the county’s capital of food, with plenty of restaurants, inns and cafés. But wherever you go along those winding Dorset lanes, you’re never far from traditional cider pubs, cafés serving afternoon tea, or farmers’ markets supplying top-notch cheeses, meats and seafood. Sporty types, you've come to the right place. Out and about, there are numerous walks and cycle routes in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and you can be on the Jurassic Coast in 40 minutes by car. Golf courses, sea fishing and sailing schools are all within a 50-minute drive too.

Local attractions

You’ll see evidence of ancient life all around Dorset. From the site, you can walk across the Downs to the Cerne Abbas Giant in 90 minutes, or stretch your legs on Chesil Beach (40 minutes’ drive) as you search for prehistoric fossils in the shingle. Other top Jurassic Coast spots include Lyme Regis and Charmouth beaches (both 40 minutes), and don’t forget Lulworth Cove or the rock formations at Durdle Door (both 45 minutes). Jump on the Heart of Wessex Line train in Maiden Newton and you can be in Weymouth in 35 minutes, to poke around cobbled backstreets and check out the yachts in the marina. There’s a hectic after-dark scene in Poole (50 minutes), while the more sedate charms of Dorchester (20 minutes) include a farmers’ market (Wednesday) and indie shops. Kids can spot rabbits and butterflies in Kingscombe Meadows Nature Reserve or even take alpacas for a walk (both 10 minutes), but number one on their to-do list may well be the thrill rides at Fantasy Island Fun Park (30 minutes).
