  • Comfortable shepherd's hut in a quiet location on a small farm
  • On the edge of Milton Abbas, 30 minutes' drive from Poole Harbour
  • Self-contained unit with a shower room, kitchenette and gas barbecue
Park Farm in Dorset has a well-built shepherd's hut in a green agricultural landscape on the edge of the village of Milton Abbas. This well-maintained hut, which dates back to the 1920s, has been restored over the years to become the comfy unit it is today. The self-contained accommodation here is furnished with essentials like a sleeping area, a kitchenette and a separate shower room. There's also a logburning stove to keep you toasty in the evening, plus a gas-fired barbecue where you can cook out of doors on a covered decking area. In adjoining fields you'll see horses and sheep quietly grazing, while a short stroll away there's a woodland at the bottom of the fields for quiet tours of the grounds. All of this can be admired from the spacious outdoor decking area, a top spot for relaxing with a cup of tea and admiring far-reaching views, which on clear days extend all the way down to Poole Harbour (30 minutes' drive) and the Isle of Wight. Park Farm is about three quarters of a mile from The Hambro Arms, the village pub. Milton Abbas also has a post office and a farm shop for supplies.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: The location, scenery, friendliness of host, views, ease to find, dog friendly, basic necessities included, log burner was super warm in the windy evenings, shower and loo attached. Sun from dawn to dusk so perfect placement, lots to do and see within an hours drive.

Disliked: Quite small and has a lean so feels like you're going to roll out of bed, maybe sunk into the ground a little over time. The bed is also no more than 5 ft 5/6 so if you're tall you'll struggle to lay properly.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Beautiful view, peaceful setting, everything you need provided. Affordable price compared to other shepherd's huts, so those wanting 5 star luxury glamping might be disappointed but certainly a more comfortable, private treat than our usual tent experience! Warm welcome from owner who was very helpful.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: The shepherds hut is idyllic; in the middle of nowhere with fantastic views down on fields with grazing sheep and horses. You can walk straight from the hut right down into acres of forest. We very much enjoyed the barbecue on the deck and the kitchen was well equipped with tools. We also slept very well, found the mattress very comfortable and as it is so quiet we slept very soundly indeed. The shower had good pressure and was lovely and hot. The eco toilet was certainly an experience but was part of the adventure.

Disliked: Unfortunately there was construction work taking place on the farm during the majority of our stay and we were not advised at time of booking or check-in. It appeared that a new dwelling was being constructed and the road leading up to the main road was dug up in order from early in the morning to access pipes. This road was only wide enough for a single vehicle to pass. Therefore, when we attempted to leave the farm on at least two of the days, we had to politely ask the builders whether we could be let out. The builder who was operating the digger was quite rude and only begrudgingly moved it, saying that we should have parked our vehicle past the road works. Unfortunately, given that we had no knowledge that the building work was taking place and the shepherds hut is so far down the track that we didn’t have visibility of the road, we wouldn’t have known to do this. This spoilt what would have been an absolutely lovely stay. It made us feel quite awkward coming and going and meant that we spent more time away from the lovely shepherds hut so that we didn’t have to deal with the builders. On our last day we even made the decision to leave at 7:30 so that we would be able to get out before any builders had arrived. A friendly text from the host advising us of building works or suggesting we move our vehicle when he/his family did, would have been much appreciated.
