  • Fully furnished off-grid eco-cabin in secluded Dorset countryside
  • A 10-minute drive to Cerne Abbas Giant; 40 minutes to Chesil Beach
  • Well-equipped wooden pod with a foodie pub in five minutes’ walk
Is it time for a (dog-friendly and very stylish) digital detox? Rock Pits Farm will give you just that: this totally off-grid experience near Plush village in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is so peaceful that it’s hard to believe you’re just a couple of hours from London. So what’s on offer here? A cool, sustainably made wooden cabin with a woodburner to keep you cosy, simple but comfy furniture, and best of all, a double bed set next to vast glass windows looking out on a wonderfully quiet landscape. Chances are you’ll want to stay there all day looking down the valley… breakfast in bed may well become a necessity. Everything is ready for you (bedding, cooking stuff, a fridge, kindling for the firepit and woodburner) so all you need to bring with you is food – pick up supplies from local farm shops (there are several within 20 minutes’ drive) or the handy store in Piddletrenthide (10 minutes). With no phone signal and no wifi connection to distract you, you’ll have all the time in the world to chill out, read a book, write a journal or meditate in nature. Should you rouse yourself to get out and about from this peaceful spot, treat yourself to the best of regional produce in the local pub (five minutes’ walk), or go wild swimming in the River Stour (20 minutes’ drive) – your dog will probably love that too.

Local attractions

In Dorset, ancient history is all around you, and there’s no better place to start exploring than at the Cerne Abbas Giant (10 minutes’ drive). A vast chalk figure inscribed into the hillside, it's thought to date back to Saxon times. Close by is an even older find; Nettlecombe Tout Hillfort (five minutes) was built in the Iron Age and sprawls over several acres. If you’re keen to get out and about on foot, head to Dorsetshire Gap (20 minutes), where five ancient drover roads meet. Become part of history and sign your name in the book under the signpost – it’s been there since 1972 – and whichever trail you decide to follow, keep your eyes peeled for ancient barrows and the remains of a medieval village. Down on the coast, poke around on the beach at Charmouth (50 minutes) for prehistoric fossils. There’s something other-worldly about Chesil Beach (40 minutes) too, as you amble along shingle that has shifted shape for centuries, while at Bowleaze Cove (35 minutes) you can take a dip in the sea and inspect ancient ruins that dot the area.
