  • Pop-up meadow camping on a hill farm near Chippenham in Wiltshire
  • A 20-minute Dave to Lacock and Bath; 45 minutes to Longleat
  • Livestock and wildlife on site, fresh eggs and seasonal veg available
Surrounded by the hills and valley of a family-run smallholding near Chippenham in Wiltshire, Shirehill Farm’s pop-up campsite is set on a wild flower meadow where cattle graze seasonally and hens range freely. If you go quietly about your daily life on this back-to-basics spot, you might get to see deer and pheasants too. There’s just a small number of pitches here, so you’ll never feel on top of the neighbours, and you can enjoy views over the field full of vivid sunflowers in peace. And as this is an eco-friendly sort of place, all power on the site is provided by a wind turbine cleverly hidden among the sunflowers. Kids are welcome to have a run around near the pitches, and there are several paths across fields and through woodland to the pond – well-controlled dogs can join in on walkies, but please remember there’s livestock around. Fancy a cooked breakfast? Buy farm-fresh eggs for a morning fry-up, and add seasonal vegetables to your evening barbecue by picking up supplies in Marshfield (five minutes’ drive) – although you’re also spoilt for choice of welcoming pubs serving good food within a 20-minute drive.

Local attractions

At Shirehill Farm, you’re on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with a choice of mellow-stone villages and towns to discover. Castle Combe (15 minutes' drive) is a peaceful spot for rural strolls, while the stately pile at National Trust - Dyrham Park (10 minutes) is open for tours of its deer park and formal gardens. If you’re holidaying with kids, number-one on your hit list may be Longleat (45 minutes) so they can spot lions and tigers on a safari drive or feed comical meerkats at the zoo. Other options include tracking down Harry Potter locations in the National Trust-owned Georgian village of Lacock (20 minutes) and accompanying alpacas on their daily exercise at Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park (25 minutes). Looking for some couples time? How about a romantic day in Bath (20 minutes)? Get off to a chilled start with an alfresco dip and a spa treatment at Thermae Bath Spa, and then nose around the open-air Roman Baths. Add in lunch at a traditional beamed pub and a performance at the acclaimed Theatre Royal and you've got yourselves a very fine day out indeed.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: I stayed there for a single night while I was hiking the Cotswold Way with my dog. Instructions were clear, the place is very nice (you sleep on a grass bed between fruit trees), not crowded, fresh water and a toilet. What more can a hiker as for. Oh, and Allison the host was super nice, welcoming and responsive by email.

Disliked: If you walk to the place from Tormarton, you have to walk on the road for roughly 2-3 miles and be EXTREMELY careful. It's not really something that is wrong with the campsite, but the overall experience of using it as I did.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: quiet

Disliked: The toilet facility was one toilet tent with a small porta loo. There is no lake suitable for swimming. The camping area is a small green space next to the hardstanding for caravans. I was disappointed with the set up and considered it poor value for money.
