  • Secluded 34-acre farm within half-hour’s drive of Bristol and Bath
  • A 10-minute woodland walk to a pub serving food; bus stop nearby
  • Barbecues and firepits allowed; foraging workshops available for a fee
Choose your own pitch at the 34-acre Dagger Wood Campsite. Among lots of leafy greenery, this park is on a family farm in Clutton and just half an hour’s drive from both Bristol and Bath. Eye it all up from the seating areas and picnic benches or while settling down by one of the firepits. Barbecues are permitted at this dog-friendly park as well, so get the blaze going and plonk yourself down for alfresco eats. If cooking is a no-no when you’re on a hol, wander 10 minutes through woodland to a pub serving meals. After other activities besides ambling? The team here also run outdoor pursuits such as wild food foraging workshops and fitness bootcamps (additional fees apply). They also offer clay pigeon shooting for a fee. Pay a visit to the on-site bookshop, which is based in a caravan that they rescued from Glastonbury and gave some extra TLC; all books cost £2 or under. The amenities at this site may be limited (two cold open-air showers, four composting toilets and fresh running water), but the friendly father and son team will pull out all the stops to make yours a comfortable stay. As the site is large, with various levels of uneven ground and hills, they can also lend a hand if mobility is an issue. If you’re leaving the car at home, the nearest bus stop is a short walk down the road and public transport runs to Bristol’s centre and Glastonbury. There's a car park for vehicles, as parking next to your pitch is not permitted.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: The site was great. Henry was really friendly and would go above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. The kids loved it as it was a place to get back to nature and really spend quality time together. The facilities were great, don’t let the cold showers put you off as they added to our experience and the gym was a nice touch too. It was an absolute bargain, we had the best time and will definitely be coming back in the summer. Having the freedom to choose your own pitch was an added bonus as all the pitches were a good size and all in great locations around the site

Disliked: Not a dislike just a note to bring insect repellent

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Where to start?! Stunning raw, rural location. No close cut lawns & mapped out gravel pitches here, it's open, natural & all the better for it. You feel somehow humbled by the place & it's wild character, and you quickly learn to respect it.

Disliked: Just the occasional traffic noise, no fault at all of the owners.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: Amazing space!! Felt isolated and welcoming and felt very safe with my 6yr daughter....the nature in the area is beautiful and as a home educating family this provided endless resources we couldn't of found elsewhere for the price....Henry was brilliant and lovely giving us directions that lead through old train tracks and even a field full of bunnies .....so good we will be back in May and excited for the next adventure....all basic facilities are well maintained and exactly what you need to get back to nature with little pagans

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: This was our second stay at Dagger Wood. We love the feel of wild camping in the forest. Simple but clean facilities and a fantastic price. Always a peaceful night of sleep and beautiful birdsong in the morning. Never felt too close to any other campers.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: My son and I spent a wonderful night in Dagger Woods, the pitches are perfect, campfire, excellent facilities (water tap and compost toilets) for that 'wild camp' feel. Henry is always available for any issues. The logs are hardwood and sustainably sourced, so ideal for camp fires. The wildlife is abundant: fallow deer, badger tracks, screech and tawny owls. The 40 minute walk to the Hunters Rest is a must do (bring wellies if it has rained), and the bookshop/caravan is well stocked. We did not want to leave, and will be back!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike if you appreciate back to basics camping

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: What a great little camp site. Simple, but top quality showers and toilets. Beautifully kept, good size pitches and all in a great location to explore Cornwall. 10 mins walk to a lovely pub and a bus stop to Redruth and Falmouth.

From the manager: Thank you for this review Victor! Unfortunately, it appears this one might be for a different campsite you've stayed on considering we are roughly 180 miles away from Falmouth. We hope you enjoyed your booking at Dagger Wood all the same.

Local attractions

Check out Chew Valley Lake (10 minutes’ drive) if you’re into birdwatching and fishing, or attempt to get a glimpse of some of the UK’s native four-legged animals at the Avon Valley Adventure & Wildlife Park (20 minutes). For city slicking once you’ve ticked off walks and cycle rides through the Combe Down Tunnel (25 minutes), make a beeline for Bristol and see the cathedral and zoo, making sure to stop off at the Brunel-designed Clifton Suspension Bridge and SS Great Britain ship as well (25 minutes). Bath’s another unmissable urban destination – head to this spot for the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey and Pulteney Bridge (half an hour), then wander around Wells, a tiny city home to a cracking cathedral (30 minutes) and the gateway to the Wookey Hole Caves. If you’re into all things bohemian, drop by Glastonbury too and browse the offbeat boutiques before taking a walk up to Glastonbury Tor for fab views over the countryside (45 minutes).
