Keen to camp, but not quite so eager to sacrifice comfort? Find the answer to your problem at Little River Glamping, set amid fields on a family farm 10 minutes’ drive from Ballymoney in County Antrim. No need to pack a tent as everything is all set up for you, meaning your holiday can begin the minute you arrive on site. Decorated with bunting and outdoor lights, the pre-erected glamping tents come in several shapes and sizes to suit couples on romantic hideaways, friends’ celebrations or families looking for lots of space so they don’t trip over each other. Each unit has a combination of comfy futons, double and bunk beds, wth bedding provided too. Whether you feel like cooking or not, there are loads of options to keep everybody well fed. Outside each unit is private decking, seating and a firepit. Hire a barbecue for alfresco feasts, or cook in the shared kitchen, kitted out with all you need, from an oven to mugs and cutlery. There are also tables down by the Flesk river – follow the woodland trail down to the water for a picnic and paddle. When you feel like venturing out to eat, there are takeaways, pubs and a fish and chip shop within 10 minutes’ drive. Otherwise, there’s little reason to leave the site. You can buy extra wood for the firepit from the honesty shop, which also sells useful stuff that’s easily forgotten (like toothbrushes), as well as sweet treats for those days when you prefer not to move very far at all.

Local attractions

If it’s first stop the beach with the kids, your biggest problem is likely to be which one to choose. Ballycastle Beach (15 minutes’ drive) is the closest, with a promenade, pier and safe swimming (lifeguards are on duty in summer), while Portrush (half an hour) is the best for surfing. For sheer size, Benone Strand (40 minutes) is hard to beat, while Portstewart (half an hour) is the spot for bracing walks backed by cliffs. On the Causeway Coastal Route (20 minutes) and flanked by the Atlantic Ocean, the spectacular Giant’s Causeway (25 minutes) is a promontory of basalt rock columns criss-crossed by hiking trails. Location of several film scenes, it shares its fame with the Dark Hedges (10 minutes), a 18th-century avenue of beech trees that featured in ‘Game of Thrones’. Other local landmarks include the rope bridge suspended 100 feet in the air between the mainland and Carrick-a-Rede Island (25 minutes). You’ll need a head for heights crossing that, and again at Fair Head (half an hour), a soaring cliff with views to Rathlin Island (make the 20-minute ferry trip from Ballycastle) and Murlough Bay (35 minutes).
