  • Small, quiet site on a working farm in the County Down drumlins
  • A 10-minute drive to Drumkeeragh Forest; half an hour to Belfast
  • Shops and restaurants in Ballynahinch, 15 minutes’ drive away
Looking for some quiet time somewhere close to forests, beaches and the city? Boy, you’re in for a treat at Brook Cottage Camping in the rolling County Down drumlins. It’s just a 10-minute drive from Drumkeeragh Forest (where there are some excellent walks and views, please and thank you) and half an hour from Belfast (yes, you’re not far from the capital of Northern Ireland, no less). The small, family-friendly site is a pop-up place up on a working farm with portable toilet access and a washing-up area. It’s on a minor road, so there shouldn’t be too much traffic noise. The road is handy for coming and going, especially if you want to make a clean sweep of some of the top attractions in Northern Ireland. Sling your fishing rods over your shoulders and set off to a local fishing spot – there are lakes within 15 minutes’ drive of the site – or go to gather your supplies from the market town of Ballynahinch. It has all the usual shops and restaurants you’d expect from such a spot. A 20-minute car ride through Dromara and Finnis is all it takes to reach Slieve Croob, the source of the river Lagan. After your climb, expect views for miles. And if you fancy a dip and some classic entertainment after your time spent outdoors, Lisburn (25 minutes' drive) has a swimming pool with water slides, a cinema and bowling venue.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Quietness, solitude, owner very friendly, lovely area!

Disliked: Until some youngsters (always them, the youth of today...) in a lowered BMW came crashing in at 22:00. Oh well, no one to blame but you know the rest of the story: talking, drinking, music, more drinking, louder music, share a spiff man, louder talking, needing to drive the BMW around the field, more drinking, vicious cycle, repeat repeat repeat... BORING! Always the same, you'd almost wish they'd be more creative in their ways of annoying other people. Anyways, that is out of control of the owner, the reason for 4 stars rather than 5 is that there is no shower!

From the manager: We're glad you enjoyed your stay here apart from that one issue. Unfortunately we didn't directly observe the other group's behaviour, be sure that if it had been observed it would not have been tolerated. We aim to be a quiet peaceful family site

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Good location with a friendly host. Very peaceful site

Disliked: Would benefit from a clear sign as it was difficult to tell from the road that we were at the correct place

From the manager: Thank you for the review and we're glad you enjoyed your stay.

This is very basic but does the job! More a stop gap site.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This is a very cheap site, probably the most reasonable you’ll find in this area. Definitely a no frills experience and good to show the kids how camping used to be! Very quiet location with just the sound of the sheep for company.

Disliked: Photos are deceiving as this really is a field in front of a farm. There are junk cars and farm machinery just beside the site which is really unpleasant to see. Maybe some fencing or panelling to shield the yard would help improve the experience. Also there really is nothing to do on the site. No safe walks as on a road.

From the manager: We're sorry you found some downsides to your stay at Brook cottage camping As stated in the description we are a pop up site on a real working farm and as such there is machinery and other farm related items within sight but not on the actual campsite We do try and keep our prices as affordable as possible for those who seek a quiet traditional camping experience and we aim to be as helpful and welcoming as possible and have often been complimented on how we go out of our way to be helpful.

Simple, no nonsense camping, like camping used to be.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Friendly welcome, level and well drained pitch, even in a yellow weather warning for rain! Great location for getting the ferry from Belfast and a peaceful spot.

Disliked: Only improvement would be a sign at the gate, to know you've arrived at the right place.

From the manager: Thanks for the positive review There's a few things in the pipeline and a sign is part of the plan

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The location was beautiful and in the middle of nowhere, yet the town was only a few minutes' drive. We recommend to visit Montalto Estate (there is a fee but completely worth it!) Site was kept spotless and the owner very friendly and helped make people firepits when requested.

Disliked: We had a rowdy couple next to us but now the owner has been notified he quickly let us know it won't be tolerated in the future and to take him to the side next time to let him know and he will promptly deal with such situations. We are very happy with this reply. All points we disliked have been taken aboard and rectified so I will no longer leave any dislikes as apart from the one night our experience there was lovely.

Local attractions

What’s there to do in Belfast (half an hour's drive)? Plenty, it turns out. After all, Northern Ireland’s capital is where the Titanic was created, so there’s a museum dedicated to its rise and fall in the dockyards. Get a taste of life behind bars at the city’s Crumlin Road Gaol Visitor Attraction and Conference Centre too, which is a prison that closed in 1996. Already a pro at kayaking or knee boarding or looking to give it a go) Let's Go Hydro (25 minutes) runs watersports and an aqua park. If that gives you a taste for some water action, one of the nearest coastal spots is Newcastle (25 minutes). It has all the classic seaside amusements and backs onto forests and mountains. There’s a woodland, lake, garden and history trail around the Montalto Estate (15 minutes), so get your picnic blankets at the ready for a peaceful afternoon on the old estate built in the 1700s.
