  • Family park on Mulroy Bay, 25 minutes from Letterkenny
  • Adventure centre with watersports, climbing, zorbing and archery
  • Indoor play, play park, gym, laser tag and teddy bear workshops
Your first reaction to the thought of your kids 'going wild' may be to shudder. And possibly reach for the corkscrew... But the offspring can go off the lead with impunity at Co Donegal's Rockhill Holiday Park, cleverly set up to let kids loose all day long... which, as any shrewd parent will know, leads to peaceful grownup time in the evening once small sorts are conked out. There's no option for boredom for any age at this big and brilliantly-equipped family park 25 minutes from Letterkenny: Rockhill is on the site of the Area 50 outdoor centre, where adventurers of all sizes can tackle climbing, archery, zorbing and kayaking among a packed programme of activities running over Easter weekend, on selected bank holidays as well as every day during peak season in July and August. There's indoor play for under-fives too, a play park, laser tag, a gym – and the enticingly named Teddy Mountain for teddy bear building workshops. Off site – if you have time/energy – Rockhill is on Donegal's handsome Mulroy Bay, within easy reach of swathes of award-winning beaches and the coastal highlights of the vast Wild Atlantic Way. Horse riding, golf at Portsalon, Fanad peninsula hikes and nature spotting around Glenveagh National Park are all close by. Amenities at Rockhill include toilets and showers, a parent and baby washroom, free wifi and a washing-up area. Guests also have access to a shared kitchenette and a TV room. Local village Kerrykeel is half a kilometre away.

Local attractions

Set off by foot from here for strolls and hikes around Mulroy Bay and its villages Kerrykeel, Milford and Cranford, or take to the car to reach the beaches of Downings, Portsalon and Rathmullan within 20 minutes. Also about 20 minutes away is Glenveagh National Park, the second biggest national park in the country. This pretty place on hillside above Glenveagh Castle covers 16,000 hectares on a former estate, and has been hailed as 'literally heaven on earth' by scenery seekers: hike around it by yourself or take one of the walking tours bookable via the visitor centre. The Fanad peninsula is also a must for a spectacularly scenic drive, starting at Mulroy Bay to journey round to Lough Swilly via Fanad Head and its famed lighthouse – pootle 2,600 kilometres or so further if you'd like to cruise along the Wild Atlantic Way all the way down to Kinsale on an Irish road trip. Also on the peninsula, Portsalon Golf Club is 15 minutes' drive away.
