  • Spacious and convenient site off the N5 between Westport and Castlebar
  • Wild Atlantic Way 15 minutes’ drive; Kylemore Abbey 50 minutes
  • In the grounds of a traditional, family-run Irish bar
Surrounded by pleasant green countryside, Marty’s Halfway House is a spacious base from where to explore the spectacular Wild Atlantic Way (about a 15-minute drive away), which runs alongside the rugged coast of County Mayo, in the west of Ireland. What is that ‘halfway’ in the name all about, you might ask? Well, the site sits just off the N5 halfway between the towns of Westport and Castlebar (about 10 minutes’ drive from either). This location makes Marty’s mighty convenient when it comes to sourcing provisions, going out for a meal or finding ways to keep the kids entertained (a swimming pool and several playgrounds are within a short drive). This is a simple spot with a choice of hardstanding and grass pitching areas. It’s worth noting that there are no showers on site, so you’ll need to either bring your own or make alternative plans for ablutions during your stay. What guests do have, however, is access to the on-site traditional, family-run Irish bar, where they can sample a wide range of drinks (including local craft beers), have a game of pool or just socialise with the locals. The pub is open Thursday to Monday between 7pm and midnight. In addition, the proximity to the coast means that you can include scenic off-shore destinations – for instance, the islands of Achill and Clare (both of which are accessible by regular ferry services) – on your itinerary.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Didn’t like anything as didn’t get there. Had to cancel due to accident but despite numerous attempts to make contact to get some of the site cost refunded was routinely ignored.

Disliked: We were unable to take this holiday due to unforeseen circumstances. With 4 weeks notice of our need to cancel I emailed the proprietor. I emailed twice more and got no response. I rang a number of times and spoke with someone, explaining the issue and our request for a refund, he said he was unable to talk to me at that time and he would ring me back. Needless to say I have not heard another word so actually I think the owners of the site are rather disreputable and I was very disappointed in their approach. Clearly they had our money and that was all they cared about. Won’t be attempting to stay here again.

From the manager: hey.sorry you feel you had a bad experience. we have done some adjustments to avoid such misinformation. so we have made the opening hours and days available for bookers to see. we unfortunately can't help if outher campers pull In and use the facility unannounced. we just the majority of camper guys are honest. our camp site is relatively new and is only taking of so there may not be outhers here all the time, but luckily enough it has been very active and as we add further facility's it will grow to be one of the best on the wild Atlantic way.thank you for your imput. marty.

Friendly staff. My advice is to pitch further from road and pub.

Electric grass and gravel tent pitch

Liked: That they gave us option to pitch anywhere.

Disliked: A little bit noisy because we chosen to pitch close to the pub and road. No shower and no toilet after pub close is difficult.

Local attractions

This corner of the country is packed with natural sites, from Brackloon Woods (20 minutes’ drive), an oak forest laced with walking paths, to Croagh Patrick (20 minutes), a distinctive peak where St Patrick is said to have fasted for 40 days. As a result of this connection, the mountain holds a deep spiritual meaning and is an important pilgrimage site. The tiny coastal village of Murrisk (20 minutes) is home to the striking National Famine Memorial and the ruins of a 15th-century abbey. On the outskirts of the village is Bertra Beach (25 minutes), a spit of sand and shingle stretching into the water at the bottom of Clew Bay. Overlooking a peaceful loch, Kylemore Abbey (50 minutes) became a shelter for Belgian Benedictine nuns after the destruction of their convent in Ypres during World War I. A stream runs through the Victorian-era walled garden, which features a fernery, a rockery and formal areas.
