  • Characterful glamping units surrounded by the scenic Ox Mountains
  • Half an hour's drive to the coast; 40 minutes to Sligo town
  • Hot tub, games room and campfire area on site; lots of walks nearby
Gorgeous hikes, fishing, surfing or beaches by day, a comfy and peaceful place to stay by night – and with the gorgeous scenery of Co.Sligo thrown in too… Ox Mountain Glamping is a fabulous choice for those who’d like to immerse themselves in rural fresh air without giving up the comforts of modern life. This family-run site is in a pretty valley in the Ox Mountains, providing access to one of Europe’s oldest mountain ranges and a well-preserved area of natural wilderness. The surroundings are packed with lovely sights including scenic lakes and blanket bog valleys as well as the peaks themselves. There's lots of wildlife to spot as you roam, plus various sights of historic or folkloric interest. All of this means lots of great walking and bike riding nearby – and the folk on site can help out with suggestions and directions for suitable routes. It may also be handy for long-distance trekkers to know that the 80km Sligo Way is about half an hour's walk away, making this a good potential stopover. It's also not far from the Wild Atlantic Way for those touring by car. Each of the accommodations here has its own character and setup, but they’ve all got proper beds that will be made up for your arrival, and have access to facilities including a springwater hot tub and a games room, plus a campfire/barbecue area for outdoor eats and cosy evenings. You'll be able to meet the resident animals too (a pygmy goat, miniature pig and rabbits among them). Tobercurry (15 minutes’ drive) is your nearest town for shops and places to eat.

2 bedroom lodge

Liked: We found the Lodge comfortable and equipped with everything we needed. The stove was lit and a glorious fire was warming the lounge when we arrived, which was so nice. The scenery is stunning and we loved the short looped walk through the forest over the river to the Mass Rock site, their dog Hunter kindly led us there and back. Our city slicker kids 2.5 and 5 managed it easily. They were entranced by the piglets, goats and ducks and all the space to run around.

Disliked: Few signs of dampness on the upper walls, on a very rainy day but no drips getting in so it didn't bother us!

Local attractions

Walking shoes are a good idea when staying here – whether you’re planning lengthy hikes or just taking a stroll through the nearby woodlands. For a nice little local wander, there’s an intact Roman Catholic Mass Rock just beyond the forest – you can make your way there along a woodland path or more quickly along the road. For more outdoor activities, head to Easky (25 minutes’ drive) for surfing, take your fishing kit to Easky Lough (five minutes) or Lough Talt (10 minutes) or saddle up for a day of horse trekking from Cuilmore (25 minutes). There are raptor shows to take in at Eagles Flying (half an hour), or you could head to Enniscrone (half an hour) for a day on the sandy beach. For some town time, take a trip to Sligo (40 minutes), which has watersports and boat trips as well as historic sites dedicated to local boy WB Yeats. It's also worth checking out what's on in Tobercurry – the town often hosts summer festivals and musical events.
