  • Stunning surroundings in Royal Deeside, five minutes from Ballater
  • On the Snow Roads route and in the Cairngorms National Park
  • Well-maintained amenities including heated shower block
Small, scenic and perfectly formed... your only problem at Howe of Torbeg will be deciding just Howe long you can eke out your stay. A family business run by Nicole and Iain, Howe of Torbeg is spectacular Deeside surrounds (see pics) as well as in a handy setting for the activities, attractions and more smashing scenery of the Cairngorms National Park. Family, road, touring and mountain biking trails meander past the site or from local town Ballater, four and a half miles away; elsewhere, there's hiking all around, snowsports and munro climbing nearby, and castles and distilleries aplenty for sightseeing days. Or just take to the car for one of the most scenic drives you'll have anywhere: Howe of Torbeg is on the A939 and part of the Snow Roads, the 90-mile route from Blairgowrie to Grantown-on-Spey that covers the highest public road in Britain. Facilities on site are excellent, including a heated shower block with two self-contained shower rooms, each with a sink and toilet. A small shop sells firewood, postcards, insect repellent, candles and local eggs; guests can also pick up board games and books for days inside. Barbecues are allowed and all units on site have firepits. For supplies and eating out, Ballater – with its bakery, deli, butcher, supermarket and restaurants – is five minutes' drive away.

Local attractions

Stride forth into the Cairngorms straight from the site, get on your bike, go skiing, go climbing, have a driving day around this stunning setting… all are easily available. Hiking tracks are all around the area immediately surrounding the site, and further trails are easily accessed around the Muir of Dinnet nature reserve 15 minutes' drive away and Invercauld House within half an hour. For those seeking even more exertion, regional munros to climb include Brown Cow Hill (20 minutes' drive), Lochnagar (40 minutes) and Corbetts Morven (50 minutes). Cyclists can tackle the paths from Bike Glenlivet trail centre 40 minutes away, or stay closer to home to access the Etape Royale road cycling route from Howe of Torbeg's local road the A939. Mountain bikers should make for Ballochbuie Forest, 35 minutes' drive away, where there are single- and double-track paths through the woodland to Loch Muick. For family cycling, Ballater is surrounded by routes of about one to four hours. Nature spotters will be chuffed to hear that, as the biggest national park in the UK, the Cairngorms is a haven teeming with wildlife: a quarter of Britain's endangered species are here, some of them only to be found in the Cairngorms. The Lecht and Glenshee ski centres are within 30 to 40 minutes.
