  • Family-run site on the edge of a quiet Argyll village
  • In the village of Strontian, a mile from the shores of Loch Sunart
  • Firepits, logs and charcoal available; shared bothy room with games
The Ardnamurchan peninsula in the wild west of Scotland is about as remote as the British mainland gets. And, as you'll see from the site pics, the experience of abiding in this ace area of Argyll is full of treats for those fond of lochs, hills and beaches. It's also a haven for all sorts of animals, with frequent visitors including seals, otters, herons and curlews. In the village of Strontian and a mere mile from its namesake loch, Sunart Camping is a family-focused site that's well-placed for all kinds of Ardnamurchan adventures. With community amenities including a well-stocked shop, restaurants, a café and a pub all within easy walking distance, this place is sure to suit those who want to stay somewhere friendly without being far from really remote rural locales. Handy facilities are available here, including fuel supplies at reception and a bothy room where you can play board games or have a natter with other guests, plus well-kept basics like toilets, hot showers and a laundry room. There's also an outdoor veranda and barbecue area, where sunsets can be watched and stories told… Although the loch is on the A861, much of the road that runs around the peninsula is single-track; if you fancy swapping four wheels for two, speak to the folks at reception about mountain bike hire.

Local attractions

Sticking around Strontian comes with several perks. Itching to get out on the water? Otter Adventures (a few minutes' walk) can sort self-guided kayak hire, while the site can book you guided canoe trips if you’d prefer paddling about in a freshwater flotilla. You'll also want to step out for a spin around Phemie’s Walk (a few minutes' walk), a 1.5-mile boardwalk trail that weaves through the trees to reach a spectacular view of the loch. Fort William and Old Inverlochy Castle, meanwhile, are an hour's drive to the east; it's about 15 minutes more to Ben Nevis, Scotland (and the UK's) highest peak, or Steall Waterfall, a scenic 120-metre drop that's well worth swinging by if you're in the vicinity. Want to do more than just admire the view? Get fully immersed in a waterfall at Vertical Descents (45 minutes), a top-rated canyoning outfit close to the Corran ferry. Further to the west, you've got more must-see sights like Ardnamurchan Point and Lighthouse (an hour and 20 minutes), the white sands of Sanna Bay (an hour and 20 minutes) and historic Ardnamurchan Distillery (40 minutes).

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: This small site it in a lovely village of Strontian. It has everything you need. Very basic but if you are self sufficient, it should not be a problem. Lovely, friendly owners were very helpful telling us what we could do around and about. The campsite sits 5 mins from Loch Sunart with its stunning views. Plenty of walks from easy to more strenuous ones and all the amenities you need in the village. If you are after a small intimate place, then this is it.

Disliked: No TV signal and no Wifi. I know this is not the be all and end all but during the winter months when it get dark at half 3, it would nice.

Liked: Although we had made a late booking and they didn't realize we had booked. The owner made us feel welcome and even let us use the bunk house for toilet and showering.
