  • Ayrshire site surrounded by forest and easily accessed from the A714
  • A 20-minute drive to Newton Stewart; 25 minutes to Ailsa Craig boats
  • On the edge of the Galloway Forest Park for hiking and bike trails
In the South Ayrshire countryside, just off the A714 and a little under 10 minutes from the village of Barrhill, Boreland Farm is a place that mixes up rural time with easy access to amenities and days out. Stay here and you can hang out with the resident horses, alpacas, sheep and goats, and pick up fresh eggs from the free-range chickens that live on site too. There’s forest all around the 10.5-acre site, so pretty views, peace and privacy come as standard, and you may well be treated to spottings of some of the wildlife that resides in the trees too (red squirrels, red kites and red deer are among the potential sightings…) Heading here for active times? This area is well known as something of a hub for outdoor activities – Newton Stewart (20 minutes’ drive) has a great golf course, and it’s also possible to go swimming or fishing in nearby lochs or organise days of horse riding, watersports, climbing and clay pigeon shooting nearby. For hikers and mountain bikers, the Galloway Forest Park, a few minutes’ drive from the farm, is the place to be (and for stargazers too, as the park has Gold Tier Dark Sky Park status…) Facilities on site also include a small shower block with toilet, a washing-up area, and a fridge for guest use. Local produce is available on request, as is wood for your barbecue or firepit. For other bits for your barbecue, pick up supplies at the village shop in Barrhill or supermarket in Newton Stewart). There’s a rural pub just under 10 minutes’ drive away if you’d rather someone else did the cooking.

Liked: Nice location & facilities! Friendly owners. Loved the farm animals!

Disliked: Farm animals had been in the camping field so was quite a bit of excrement.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. Due to not having any bookings for camping for a couple of weeks we moved our sheep in the field to graze. Your booking came in so we moved the sheep out, unfortunately we did not have time to sweep the field, normally the rain will wash any evidence into the soil.

Exactly what we needed. Will be back.

Liked: Everything - cannot recommend this place highly enough. From the lovely warm welcome from Sally & Paul, the beautiful surroundings and the lovely animals. The amenities really surprised me, such a lot of thought has gone into these. Very clean and all the added touches, like hand soap and hand towels, was such an unexpected delight. If you are looking to just switch off and relax, this is the place to go. We will most certainly be back. Sally & Paul, thanks for everything, we will see you again soon.

Disliked: The midgies - but that cant be helped - it's Scotland!!!

Liked: The stay was absolutely brilliant. Lovely and friendly wildlife (alpacas, goats, horses), beautiful scenery and the Galloways are only a quick drive away. The toilet block was clean and had warm water. Lots of eco friendly and well thought through touches to make your stay more comfortable. Sally and Paul were a delight and made a lovely haven for campers. Excellent MBT near by and gorgeous view from Bruce’s stone

Liked: I thoroughly enjoyed everything about our over night stay, by far the most wonderful guests I have came across! The land and views were spectacular! All animals at the farm were very friendly with ourselves and the children and the bond between guests and the animals was beautiful to witness. We used the pitch area but after being shown the forest getaway, we will be booking that in the future. Look forward to the next visit it was an absolute pleasure!

Disliked: Not one thing to dislike

From the manager: Thank you for your review, you provided your own accommodation. Our farm in the middle of nowhere doesn’t suit everyone, just for reference the local pub in the village will be opening soon which will provide food & drink.

Liked: Loved every second of our trip, sitting tonight wishing we could’ve stayed longer. Sally and Paul couldn’t have been any more friendly or helpful, nothing was any bother to either of them. They made us feel so welcome to be there and explore round the different animals and the whole site. The site itself is on a slight hill, this only adds to the fantastic scenery, especially at night with the beautiful sunset and a clear view of the stars. Toilet block with shower and washing facilities was immaculate, we were really impressed with the shower. There is a small shop on site, stocked with all the essentials, especially the ice poles that our daughter loved. Will definitely be back

Local attractions

Board a boat, make your way onto mountain biking trails or take your golf club out for a swing… with Girvan (25 minutes’ drive) for boat trips to Ailsa Craig, the 7Stanes: Glentrool Mountain Bike Trails (10 minutes’ drive) and the Turnberry Golf Course (35 minutes) all within striking distance, there’s a nice variety of activities around. For afternoons of the historical kind, Culzean Castle (45 minutes) is more than just the clifftop castle. There are playgrounds, a deer park and beaches down below, so plenty of places for everyone to explore. The Cistercian Glenluce Abbey (40 minutes) and the 300-year-old Castle Kennedy Gardens (40 minutes) are some other cool spots you could visit that have a long history. For some gentler types of activities, perhaps go for a brew and a wander around the Glenwhan Gardens (40 minutes), taste your way around the Crafty Distillery (20 minutes) or keep as quiet as you can be to get up and close with the deer around the Red Deer Range (35 minutes). There are more animals and activities for kids around Monreith Animal World (45 minutes).
