  • Scenic site with swish glamping huts overlooking the Galloway Hills
  • Galloway Forest walks and mountain biking within a 20-minute drive
  • Pods each include a kitchen, woodburning stove, double bed and ensuite
Sorting out where to stay on a stint in south-west Scotland? Forget the tent and cosy up in comfort at Barnharrow Holiday Pods, a glamping site on a 100-acre farm with fully equipped and well-insulated accommodation. Each unit at this park in the stunning region of Dumfries and Galloway sleeps up to two adults and a couple of kids in a space with a double bed (linens and towels included), an ensuite shower, a toilet and a washbasin. A two-ring cooking hob and a fridge make prepping eats easier and the woodburning stove comes in handy for extra warmth. After all, you might be wanting that bit of extra heat once you’re done with a day out in the local countryside: this site is set between Newton Stewart (15 minutes’ drive), a town edging the hills and trails of Galloway Forest Park, and the lovely Loch Ryan (30 minutes). Newton Stewart is the place to stock up on essentials at the shops, while Kirroughtree (20 minutes) is your gateway to adventures like mountain biking, zipwiring and zorbing. Back on base, light up the barbecue and campfire – both are permitted at this peaceful park – and gaze up at the night sky. Galloway Forest Park is a Dark Sky Reserve, so the stars tend to twinkle brightly here.

Spruce camping pod

Liked: Everything! The pod was comfy, clean, and very well appointed with everything we needed for our stay. We loved having a campfire in the fire pit outside, as well as in the log burner. I purchased two sets of wood for the log burner and fire pit from Emily which was well worth it. There is so much to do nearby but my toddler didn’t want to leave the pod, he loved it so much! The grounds are also beautiful with a lovely, magical walk through the woods nearby. Emily is so kind and helpful. I didn’t have any mobile reception and forgot to bring my paper map, but she provided me with directions to different activities we wanted to do. No Wi-Fi which suited me well, it was so great to completely disconnect and just enjoy the weekend with my son. Overall, this is the perfect location for a variety of activities throughout Galloway - or just relaxing in the extremely peaceful, quiet surroundings. We will definitely be back and hope to stay a week next summer to properly explore the area.

Local attractions

Galloway Forest Park is said to be the largest of its kind in the UK, so set aside a fair bit of time to spend here roaming around the woods, hills and lochs or embarking on some cycling at the acclaimed 7stanes mountain bike trail centre in Glentrool (30 minutes’ drive). For peaceful pastimes, bring your rod along to the Three Lochs (25 minutes) for a spot of fishing, then continue on to the 75 acres of the Castle Kennedy Gardens in Sheuchan (25 minutes), with its manicured landscape and glittery lakes, for strolls. If you’re hot on horticulture, aim for the Logan Botanic Garden (40 minutes) as well, to see plants from all over the world at an open-air establishment set in an area with an almost subtropical climate. The Gulf Stream keeps the air relatively warm, so flora from Australia, New Zealand, South America and Southern Africa flourishes here. You’ll also be close enough to the coast for quick seaside trips while staying at this park: Dalavan beach, just off the Big Water of Fleet, is 35 minutes away.
