  • Pretty farm for glamping stays with excellent views over Loch Fitty
  • A 15-minute drive from Dunfermline town and 45 from Edinburgh
  • Guests can help to feed and care for farm animals and take farm tours
If a getaway that lets you get back to nature is exactly what’s needed to unwind and rest up, make a beeline for Craigduckie Shepherds Huts, a family-friendly glampsite 15 minutes’ drive from the Royal Burgh of Dunfermline in Fife – you’ll be counting sheep in no time. The scenic site’s on a working farm, so don’t forget to pack wellies… There are free farm tours for every guest, and helping out with feeds and looking after the sheep, cows and chickens is encouraged if that gets kids (or grownups) bleating with excitement. Nearby explores and adventures are very much encouraged too, with the surrounding countryside providing lots of walks, nature and rural views. It’s about a mile to the main road along farm tracks, so it’s very peaceful on site. That means the kids can run have space to scamper about in the fresh air while the grownups sit back, put their feet up and take in the views towards the Pentlands without worry. Need a little more energy burned? Within 10 minutes' drive of base, Craigluscar Activities has tractor driving, mini Highland Games, hovercrafts and clay pigeon shooting, and there’s karting at Knockhill Racing Circuit; the Waterboard and Waterski Scotland centre meanwhile is over in Town Loch, five minutes’ drive from the park, for aquatic thrill-seeking (or just a leisurely walk around the lake…). Back at Craigduckie Shepherds Huts, wifi access is available and you can purchase produce grown locally to sizzle up on your camping stove. Barbecues and campfires are also permitted at the park.

Lamb Lookout shepherd's hut

Liked: The shepherds hut was amazing. To have a kitchen, shower and toilet was pure luxury. The whole hut was fitted out to a very high spec. Having a couple of hens to look after and collecting the eggs to eat was an inspired idea. My daughter loved looking after them and checking for the eggs in the nest boxes. Plus they tasted delicious. The view was absolutely beautiful and there was literally acres of room to run around in. Katie made a fabulous hostess. She made us really welcome and happily showed us around the farm and was full of advise on the local area. We can also recommend the farms sausages and lamb burgers cooked on the BBQ.

Disliked: I think it would be hard to find anything to dislike.

Ewe View shepherd's hut

Liked: Beautiful setting, huts really clean and so easy to use. With the fire pit, and the outside bath hut overlooking the loch, simply great. Our Hosts where amazing, and have thought of everything. We where visiting Knockhill, only 4 miles away. We also had time to spot a Buzzard, rabbits and two herons who appear to be nesting in the clump of trees just in front of the loch, thats how quiet and peaceful it is. This is an absolute gem and I am sure we will be finding many other things to do in the area, and will be returning to Craigduckie in the future. A great example of the best Scotland has to offer.

Lamb Lookout shepherd's hut

Liked: Great set up with lovely touches, cake on arrival and Katie popped down to check on us. Great base to explore the East of Scotland. So quiet and remote. Not so much a dislike but as we did not have a car it was a fair distance from the town, we were fortunate to find a local taxi chap who agreed to drop and collect us as required, so that's why this is not a dislike. If you have your own transport its perfect.

Disliked: See above

Local attractions

Dunfermline is 15 minutes’ drive from Craigduckie Shepherds Huts for shops, restaurants and pubs, but it’s also got a clutch of cultural sights to check out, including the rather handsome Dunfermline Abbey and the pilgrimage site of St Margaret’s cave. Poke around the town for a morning or so then make your way to the larger settlement of Perth (35 minutes) for the 16th-century Black Watch Castle and the tasty-sounding stately home of Scone Palace. For a complete change of scenery, a little closer to the park (25 minutes) is Deep Sea World, a national aquarium known for its sizable sand tiger sharks; if you’re more of an angler than a wildlife watcher, trawl for trout instead by taking a trip over to Balmule Fishery, five minutes’ drive from the park. Those with small humans in their care can dunk them in the fun pool here if they're not into wielding a rod.
