Local attractions

Anglers will be pleased to learn that they can fish saltwater Loch Linnhe right from the pitches. More physically challenging local pursuits include skiing at Aonach Mòr (half an hour’s drive) or Glencoe Mountain Resort (25 minutes) in winter, plus climbing, hiking and mountain biking in the Nevis Range (40 minutes) all year around. Harry Potter fans – or indeed anyone who loves a spectacular rail journey – can catch the Jacobite Steam Train from Fort William (15 minutes) to trundle over the famed viaduct at Glenfinnan. The Highland town is also the gateway to walks along the Caledonian Canal from Banavie (25 minutes), where you can admire the engineering marvel that is Neptune’s Staircase, with eight locks raising boats uphill between lochs Linnhe and Lochy. Take a boat cruise from Fort William Pier (15 minutes) for the chance to see seals basking on the shores of Loch Linnhe – and occasional dolphins, porpoises or ospreys. If you fancy going in search of Nessie, pretty Fort Augustus (an hour) has stunning views over Loch Ness, giving you a fair chance of spotting the elusive monster. If you don’t see him, console yourself with a visit to Ben Nevis Distillery (20 minutes) to sample some single malt.
