  • Peaceful family-run site with views over Loch Shin
  • A 10-minute drive from Lairg; good base to explore munros and corbetts
  • Fully-equipped camp kitchen and a launderette on site
Highland lochs are often what brings people to the Highlands and Islands. What keeps them coming back is more than just the stunning scenery – it’s also peaceful and friendly places like Woodend Caravan and Camping Park. Owned and run by Alan and Karen Ross, from whom you should expect a warm Scottish welcome, the small family-run site has simply exceptional views of hills and Loch Shin, the largest loch in Sutherland at 17 miles long. Lairg, known locally as the ‘crossroads of the north’, is just six miles away from Woodend Caravan and Camping Park. Just like the town, the site is a central base to get out and explore the north and west Highlands, which are excellent for hill walking, backpacking, fishing, cycling or riding. This is also a fab place to get stuck into munro and corbett bagging (which might as well be a rite of passage in the Scottish Highlands). Your appetite may be sky-high after so many outdoor activities, and handily, the site has a fully-equipped camp kitchen with a kettle, toaster, microwave and fridge, as well as cutlery, plates, mugs, tea, coffee and sugar, dishwashing sinks and a breakfast bar. The views don’t get cut off in any part of the large camping field, which is on an undulating and gently sloping hill with some reasonably flat areas. The toilet block has central heating and modern showers served by a hot water system; it’s also fully insulated, kept warm by an insulated roof and larch cladding. There’s also a launderette with a washing machine and a dryer on site.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Facilities excellent, showers and toilets immaculately clean and welcoming- best we have seen on this trip to Scotland. Availability of toaster/kettle etc in campers kitchen ideal and lovely idea to have a place to sit away from the elements. Washing line really helpful too to air dry clothes. Scenery and views stunning!

Disliked: Tumble dryer was out of action during our visit but hosts disclosed this immediately and there was washing line available for drying so not a big deal at all.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The location was breathtaking. Facilities were the cleanest I’ve ever seen at a campsite. Added touches of access to a microwave, toaster and kettle was a godsend when we’d arrived on a Sunday evening, not appreciating there was nowhere open to eat and the weather was so bad we were unable to use the camping stove or bbq. Friendly helpful interactions with owner.

Local attractions

Ever seen salmon jumping? If not, your first experience might take place at the Falls of Shin (20 minutes’ drive), a waterfall which gained a reputation for its salmon leaping upstream. Perhaps you’re sussing out exactly which lochs to visit after you’ve explored Loch Shin. Loch Craggie (20 minutes), 166 metres above sea level, can be tracked down by a forest trail from Lairg. Loch Merkland (25 minutes), a fair bit larger, has a good selection of walking trails too. If you’re keen for more of an uphill challenge, you might want to eye up Ben Hee (45 minutes). The quickest trail to the summit begins at Loch Merkland… and what a summit it is, as the highest summit in Sutherland (2,840 feet, no less). The views over Loch Merkland are a worthy reward for the climb.
