  • Farm site with spectacular scenery just off the North Coast 500 route
  • A five-minute drive from Kyle of Lochalsh; Isle of Skye 10 minutes
  • Friendly animals on site; 1.5 miles from a shop, pub and restaurant
Whether you're touring the mainland's Highland highlights along the North Coast 500 or heading over the sea to the Isle of Skye, you'll get a warm welcome at Auchtertyre Farm, a friendly and informal rural spot five minutes' drive to the east of Kyle of Lochalsh. This family-run site is located on a small working farm, where the owners raise horses and ponies at the foot of gorgeous Auchtertyre Hill. It's generally a pretty laidback place, with generous pitch sizes, plenty of peace and quiet and family-friendly vibes all round. When the weather is fine, guests at Auchtertyre Farm are welcome to set up a barbecue for a sizzle or to pick up some of the farm's fresh local produce for a picnic. A handy shop, pub and restaurant are on hand a mile and a half down the road for when the forecast takes a turn, all of which are accessible via a paved route or an off-road path. The area's surrounding scenery means that bikers, hikers and adventurous activity enthusiasts will be well catered for here, while history fans will find top heritage sites like the gorgeous Eilean Donan Castle within a five-minute drive.

Local attractions

There's so much to see and do within just a couple of miles of Auchtertyre Farm, whether you want to photograph the sunset, loch and castle at Eilean Donan (five minutes' drive), take a waymarked woodland walk through the forests around Lochalsh (five minutes), hop aboard Red Moon Cruises for a tour of the coast (five minutes) or head to the nearest swimming pool and leisure centre (five minutes). Thanks to the road bridge, crossing over to the Isle of Skye takes around 10 minutes without traffic. Getting to well-known scenic spots like the Fairy Pools (an hour) and the Old Man of Storr (an hour and 10 minutes) should definitely be on the agenda, but there's a lot to see and do in the island's biggest town of Portree (an hour). Even if the Hebrides are going to be your focus, there are lots of parts of the local mainland that are also well worth exploring. The Falls of Glomach (30 minutes), for instance, is one of the highest and most-isolated waterfalls in Britain – so much so that getting there involves a 12-mile round trip on foot – but the views at the other end are more than worth it.

Non-electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Nothing, really

Disliked: Disgusting toilet block, muddy, no grey water disposal

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I’m very sorry that you did not enjoy your night here. You possibly were unable to read the ‘out of order’ sign on the toilet as this was blocked, but as you were travelling in a self contained vehicle (this is who we cater for) this should not have been a problem for you. I’m not sure where you were roaming on the farm to find mud, even though it is west coast summer here so we have plenty of rain, I can’t think of any place on the farm currently that has any mud with the exception of the gateway in to the horses field, which is where you most certainly should not have been. With regard to your comment of not being worth the money - £12 (of which we receive £9.59) for a safe off road place to park up, with waste disposal facilities, water and a lovely view along with safe space for your children to play and run free and lots of lovely friendly animals to see is not a lot of money to pay. It is very sad that leaving such a review will likely have a long term impact on the business.

Disliked: The toilets were in a state and by the next morning both were blocked. Road noise. Had booked for two nights but just stayed for one.

Non-electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Convenient stop after leaving Skye. Road is not visible (but close enough to hear). No check-out time.

Disliked: Toilets were very dirty. Expected something more for £5 extra to use "facilities"

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, and I’m glad you appreciate the location. Unfortunately I think you have misunderstood our signage on-site - the £5 charge is not an extra charge for using the facilities on top of your stay. When you stay over the use of all facilities is included in the total £12 that you pay for your pitch. The £5 charge is for anyone who isn’t staying over - it is a fee for passing Motorhomes to pop in just to empty their waste tank and rubbish and take on water. We’re very proud to be able to offer this service in an area with very limited infrastructure catering for the self contained Motorhome/campervan sector and it is a very welcomed and well Used facility for this service. I’m really sorry that you misunderstood this, and if you put an extra £5 in the honesty box when you were here I’m happy to send that back to you if you’d like to make direct contact.
