  • Self-built shepherd’s hut powered by solar panels
  • A 40-minute drive from Kielder Water and Carlisle, with walks nearby
  • Stroll to the village’s pubs and shops; barbecue and firepit provided
Built from scratch by none other than the owners themselves, the dog-friendly Tweedenburn Shepherd's Hut is more than just a labour of love; it’s also a completely off-grid little retreat powered by solar panels, and it's an excellent base for exploring the Scottish Borders. What could these explorations involve? A 15-minute stroll into the local village of Newcastleton to visit the shops, pubs and cafés might be your first port of call. The village is surrounded by walking routes and the 7 Stanes – Newcastleton’s mountain biking trail is on the outskirts of the village for adventures on two wheels. Perhaps you might also want to visit the city of Carlisle (40 minutes’ drive) or the scenic Kielder Water (40 minutes) and Kielder Forest Park (half an hour) for more days outdoors. When you’re ready for a kip, there’s a comfortable double bed for two inside the hut. With a woodburning stove, kitchen unit, seating area, fridge and a phone charging point also part of the package, you should have much of what you need on hand for a quiet and cosy break. A gas-powered shower and a composting toilet are also provided in a separate shepherd’s hut. Towels are provided, as are all cooking utensils. This might come in handy when you’re using the cooking facilities outside, which include a barbecue and a firepit (and you can grab some extra flavourings from the small herb garden if you fancy).

Local attractions

Scottish Borders scenery is simply splendid on hikes around Priesthill (40 minutes’ walk) and the Kielder Forest Park (half an hour’s drive). The latter often has stunning starry skies, but by day, there are acres of dense forest to explore and activities like mountain biking around Kielder Water (40 minutes) – not to mention its handy cafés and restaurants. Have yourself a long – and very historic – hike along the Hadrian's Wall Path (around 35 minutes). The 84-mile walking trail traces the length of the famous Roman wall and has forts and all sorts along the route, depending upon how far you go. The wall winds through the city of Carlisle (40 minutes), meaning that it’s possible to detour to Carlisle Cathedral and Carlisle Castle too. Semi-ruined but still stunning, Hermitage Castle (15 minutes) is another historic spot within easy reach – it held the borders strong for 400 years. It’s not all about castles and cities, however – splendid though they are. Kielder Water Bird Of Prey Centre (half an hour) is home to over 60 birds, including owls and falcons. The centre runs walks with hawks, hands-on owl experiences and birds of prey courses.
