  • Dog-friendly site overlooking Ben Lomond
  • Half an hour’s drive from both Glasgow and Loch Lomond
  • On-site café and restaurant; firepits permitted
What a spot – you may very well be proclaiming those three words when you roll up to Mountain View Campsite and Retreat. Overlooking Ben Lomond, the site is half an hour’s drive from both Glasgow and the southernmost tip of Loch Lomond. Indeed, what a spot for city jaunts, dipping in waterfalls, hiking around the loch and climbing mountains. On site, mornings might start with you nursing a coffee from the on-site café and tucking into breakfast self-cooked over a firepit (which are kindly allowed on site). There’s also a restaurant on site for other main meals. As the site’s pet friendly, you could continue the morning with a local dog walk. There are plenty of walking trails nearby, whether you’re with a pet or not. One of the most stunning is The Devil's Pulpit, five minutes’ drive away, a stunning gorge and waterfall featured in Outlander. The fact that Mountain View Campsite and Retreat is five minutes’ walk away from a residential outdoor activity centre should already be a clue that this site is in a sweet spot for outdoorsy folks. The car park for the Ben Lomond mountain hike (on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond) is a 40-minute drive away. For watersports or walks, Loch Lomond is a good destination. Plus, for anglers and golfers, it’s a 15-minute walk to a fishery and a 35-minute walk to a golf course from the site.

Bell tent

Liked: Views are amazing. Great options available, hotel, campsite, bell tents and spaces for camper vans. Andrew the host was really friendly and was always available if you have any questions. Plenty of free wood available for the camp fires but take take something to get the fire started.

Disliked: Need to update the postcode in the pitch up website to G63 9AW. We ended up 2 other places before we found the correct post code.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: The campsite is pretty. Owner really friendly. Dog friendly. Breakfast possible and also lunch.

Disliked: Toilets/Shower were a little bit dirty. Dogs of owner were unleashed and the younger ones really intrusive. Difficult if you have a reactive dog. Please be aware! The address isn’t correct. You have to drive to “the West Highland Way Campside”.

Liked: Beautiful surroundings, lovely walks, good facilities, host was very helpful. The glamming tents were comfortable with clean bedding and towels provided.

Disliked: Continental breakfast was included and drinks (tea, coffee, hot choc and juice) were provided 24/7 which was great. The foods menu was very expensive , which was a shame as we would have eaten on site if it was more reasonable.

Liked: Hosts were fantastic, campsite was clean and tidy!

Disliked: Information provided on Pitch Up website were inaccurate/misleading. Breakfast is not included. Fridges are not available to hire. You need to provide your own camping cable if you want electric hook-up

From the manager: Hi Aaron. We apologise about the fridge. We will change that on the site. As you know we are a new campsite and we had an issue with flooding earlier this month. Continental breakfast is included for free. Cooked breakfast is £10. Thank you again for everything. Danuta and Jacek

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: View

Disliked: Costs. Not worth the money charged owner was meant to give me 6.00 change after paying him in cash. We booked a hardstanding with grass. We were put into a car park for the night. It cost £40 per night but cost us £46. We weren't told where to get water. Or where to dispose of our chemical waste/grey waste. This site is not ready for guests. The cost of meals on offer were over priced as well £30 for a dinner £15 for dessert restaurant prices. The smell of dogs in the dining room alone put us off.

From the manager: Hi Yes we are a new site. The £6 was for the Pitchup Commission and not charged by us. All you had to do was to ask a member of staff where the water and waste disposal units were and we would have happily showed you. Meals are always optional and not compulsory. As a consumer you always have a choice. Yes we are pet friendly here and guests do bring dogs. Thank you. We wish you well. Aleta

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: I travel a lot around Scotland, so I’m always on the lookout for favourite spots - and this is definitely one of them! The owner and staff were really friendly, and the site itself is relaxed with plenty of shared spaces, so had a real ‘community feel’. If you want peace, you’ll have it, but if you want a little social interaction, it’s there. Breakfast was fantastic and a real communal affair, sat around a huge table in the main house (John Muir’s original home) and chatting with other visitors. My morning cuppa became an engrossing 2-hour chat about life, the universe and camping spots :D There was plenty of space for my camper, with EHU and and rolling farmland views; private shower/toilet (basic, and shower door was a little temperamental, but included in the price); washing machine and tumble drier, lots of picnic benches, free Wi-Fi, BBQ, campfires and dogs allowed. Things I really liked: - Ample woodland walks (you’re in the middle of the countryside) - Takeaway window at the house with good food on offer, and a restaurant. Cafe, too, but was being refurbished during my stay (May 2023) - A 24/7 supply of free tea and coffee, and a breakfast of toast, cereal, fruit, breakfast bars, waffles and jams, served ‘hotel style’ in a cosy dining room - Cosy TV room with a real fire (probs in the winter) and books to read - Covered area with comfy rattan couches outside - Price - £20pp. With breakfast, Wi-Fi and showers included, I think it’s good value for couples, but amazing for me as a solo-traveller. If you’ve ever been to the US/Canada, you’ll have come across ‘Trail Angels’ - people who show kindness and generosity to people passing through. That’s the kind of feel this place has. Definitely worth a visit.

Disliked: Really nothing I can think of, other than that the shower/toilet could do with a little TLC. However, they were doing a lot of improvements during my stay, so maybe that’s on the list.

Local attractions

When you’re deciding what’s on the itinerary for the day, the first question might be: the loch or the city? If it’s the latter you decide on, Glasgow (half an hour's drive) has theatres, historic Victorian and art nouveau architecture and museums. A day trip to hilly and historic Edinburgh (an hour and 35 minutes) is very achievable too. If instead the loch won your attention, make your way to Balloch (half an hour) on the southern end of Loch Lomond. It’s home to Balloch Castle & Country Park, where there’s gorgeous green parklands and Tudor Gothic architecture. Conic Hill (half an hour), further north, will provide a shorter uphill hike for those who don’t feel quite up to hiking Ben Lomond. There are other walks to choose from, of course. Blairskaith Linn (15 minutes), on the way to Glasgow, has some simply stunning bits to see, including an 1850s limestone mine and cave network and a waterfall.
