  • Stirlingshire glampsite near the start of the West Highland Way
  • Five minutes’ drive to Milngavie, and 35 minutes to Loch Lomond
  • Wooden pods with underfloor heating, kitchenettes and ensuite showers
Long-distance walkers who are partial to a bit of luxury, gather round. The natty wooden pods at Craigmaddie Glamping in Stirlingshire are in pole position for hiking the scenic West Highland Way between Milngavie (five minutes’ drive) and Fort William. That said, this peaceful rural spot – set on two acres of private land – is not just for long-distance walkers. Families and friends staying here can set off on lots of nearby hikes, play games of golf, sample local whiskies or plan day trips to buzzy Glasgow. The site is also easy to access from the A81, making it a clever overnighter for anyone travelling north to the Highlands and Islands. Each of the glam pods here is crafted from timber and has underfloor heating (which should keep you cosy on any less-than-balmy days) as well as a well-equipped kitchenette, ensuite shower room, and living space with a dining table and a wall-mounted flat-screen TV. The sleeping arrangements include a mixture of double beds, bunks and convertible sofas – and all bedding is supplied, along with bath towels, crockery and kitchen utensils. Craigmaddie is run by a brother-and-sister team who are happy to answer any questions and help you out in any way they can.

Local attractions

As well as easy access to the West Highland Way, there are plenty of local walking and biking routes around the area. Mugdock Country Park has waymarked paths leading to castle ruins, while the spectacular countryside around Strathblane (both five minutes’ drive) is riddled with hiking trails. Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park (35 minutes) also has its fair share of walking and cycling options in glens and forest and by the side of lochs. There are golf clubs galore within 15 minutes’ drive, and if the weather lets you down, head to the indoor pool at Allander Leisure Centre, or take a guided tour of Glengoyne (both 10 minutes) and Auchentoshan (20 minutes) whisky distilleries, where you can also taste and buy the finished product. If you’re with the kids, Blair Drummond Safari Park (45 minutes) is just the job for a day trip, with animal encounters, a sea lion pool and rare big cats. Other entertaining options for families include cruises down the River Clyde (35 minutes) on a vintage steamer, and all the interactive experiments and displays at Glasgow Science Centre (40 minutes).
