  • Cosy hay loft on a six-acre estate 10 minutes' drive from Lampeter
  • Ceredigion coast and Brechfa Forest within a half-hour drive
  • Beds, mattresses and wifi provided; private wetroom and laundry
This is Ceredigion, so it’s prime outdoorsy-activity territory, whether you seek beaches, forests, waterfalls, boat trips or (ideally) some combination of all this and more. Indeed the alfresco activities and surrounding scenery may be excellent in this part of Mid Wales, but it’s likely that at some point you’ll be ready to close the door on all that and settle down somewhere warm and cosy for the night. That’s where the little glamping unit at Maesyfelin Isaf comes in – this old stone hay loft has been converted into a fab little bolthole for just those times. It’s a flexible open-plan space with a super-kingsize bed and two single beds (with bedding and linen provided, although you'll need to bring towels along) plus a table and handy bits and bobs like free wifi and several electric sockets for phone charging and the like. Also included is a kitchenette with fridge, two-ring induction hob, combi oven, kettle and toaster. A short dash from the hayloft gets you to the private wetroom and the laundry area (most welcome if you happened upon a muddy patch while out walking); there’s also a private garden area just outside the loft if you fancy sitting out, and guests are welcome to take a wander around some of the site’s six acres down to the banks of the Nant Cledyn river. Bit too tired for such things? Throw open the Velux windows to let a bit of fresh air in instead. And of course you’ll want to eat… both Llanybydder (five minutes’ drive) and Lampeter (10 minutes) are good places to source supermarket supplies or pub dinners.

Local attractions

How long have you got? Hopefully a rather long while… because Maesyfelin Isaf is well located for much meandering. Bikes or boots at the ready if you’re heading to Brechfa Forest (25 minutes' drive) – the walking and bike trails through 6500 hectares of woodland over here are really rather fab. Cwm Rhaeadr Forest (45 minutes) and Llyn Brianne Reservoir (55 minutes) should also be on the list for walkers. Rather gentler ambles might take you around the flora-filled environs of Cae Hir Gardens (10 minutes) or the National Botanic Garden of Wales (45 minutes), in Regency parkland with a spectacular glasshouse designed by Sir Norman Foster. The Georgian villa, working farm and gardens at Llanerchaeron (25 minutes) are also worth checking out, as are the rather older structures at Dolaucothi Gold Mines (also 25 minutes), which trace their history back to Roman times. Make some time for coastal capers too: the beaches at Aberaeron and New Quay are both less than half an hour away, with the latter also the place to find boats heading out in search of the dolphins that lurk in Cardigan Bay.

Hay Loft lodge

Liked: Nice atmosphere, quiet, friendly hosts, great info on the local attractions, loved the wood stove.

Disliked: Would be nice to have loo in the room.

From the manager: Glad that you enjoyed your stay with us and found our website useful for the local attractions. As you say the private 'loo' (and walk in shower) isn't in the Hay Loft but a short walk off the courtyard, so night time 'trips' can get a bit breezy :-)

A great 5 night stay in the most picturesque surroundings, great hosts
