  • Peaceful wild camping site on a dairy farm by Vyrnwy river in Powys
  • A 15-minute drive to Welshpool; half an hour to Lake Vyrnwy
  • Private fishing on the river; views of Vyrnwy valley and grazing cows
Afon Dyffryn is a working dairy farm set in a secluded valley, with grass pitches set next to a burbling river. It’s easy for you (and the dogs) to try wild swimming off the stone beach if you like, and guests get exclusive access to the one-mile stretch of private fishing too. This is a back-to-nature sort of place, with birds flitting over the river and dairy cows grazing in the fields. If you’re keen on birdwatching, you might get lucky and see peregrine falcons soaring or dippers bobbing in the water at RSPB Lake Vyrnwy, a half-hour drive away. There’s lots of walking directly accessed from the campsite: the 135-mile Glyndwr’s Way runs across the farm and wends its way through Mid Wales’s moorland and forests, while the ancient Dyffryn Hill Celtic Fort is 30 minutes away on foot. You can also seek out extreme sports, mountain biking and climbing opportunities in Snowdonia National Park, an hour and 20 minutes away. With limited cooking facilities on site, you’ll be glad to know there’s a handy well-stocked shop in Meifod village (for bigger shops, head for Welshpool), a five-minute drive from the base camp, as well as an equally handy village pub with a cosy inglenook fireplace, gastro food and local beers.
