Set among woodland edging the Brecon Beacons National Park in Powys, River's Edge is a luxuriously appointed and ultra-spacious wooden glamping pod surrounded by trees. Set well away from the main house and protected by a fence for extra seclusion, this is a privater-than-private spot – just the ticket for couples looking for some peaceful downtime. The standalone pod is all kitted out to a high standard, with a full-size double bed (bedding and towels are provided) in the recessed sleeping area plus a couple of shelves for storage and USBs for charging devices. You can stow away your gear in the wardrobe, and soak under the shower with complimentary toiletries in the bathroom. A cosy sofa does for days when it’s almost too much effort to move, and you can rustle up simple meals in the compact kitchenette with an electric hob, fridge/freezer and microwave oven. Most things you need in the way of crockery and cooking utensils are on hand too. If the weather is playing nice, outside there’s an enclosed gravel courtyard with a gas barbecue. On balmy days, set about grilling supper so you can dine alfresco at your private table overlooking the River Tawe, or admire the views while chilling on your two-seater swing chair (summer only) Forgotten something? No problem, whizz along the A4067 to Ystradgynlais (five minutes’ drive), where you’ll find most things you need in the superstore, as well as pubs and restaurants if cooking is not your thing.

Camping pod

Liked: Fantastic experience from start to finish. Beautiful pod with everything you need or could want! Such attention to detail and the pod is really well designed and thought out! Lovely location to explore Wales. Lovely view of the river and gorgeous barbecue- so tranquil! We left a bag and Cath and Gareth posted it to us and it arrived the next day! So helpful! We couldn’t have asked for more! Would highly recommend!

Local attractions

Outdoor explorers can get straight out into the Brecon Beacons National Park, with all its opportunities for exercise. Walkers stride up challenging Pen y Fan (40 minutes’ drive) for glorious views over mountain peaks, or take in tumbling cascades on an amble along the Four Waterfalls Walk from the car park (25 minutes). The Merthyr Tydfil to Brecon Sustrans route is a scenic Brecon Beacons route for mountain bikers, following a former railway line through forest and heathland. Whether you want to tackle serious off-road trails or potter along traffic-free lanes, there are many choices in the park. For a change of pace, pedal past local landmarks on a guided trike tour, or test your mettle at Walters Arena (35 minutes), a former open-cast mine now upcycled as an off-roading venue for rally drivers and motor-bikers (booking essential). Need a rest day after all that activity? Visit the underground caverns at the National Showcaves Centre for Wales (10 minutes), or make a beeline for the Red Kite Feeding Station (35 minutes) to marvel at birds of prey circling in the thermals.
