  • Luxury eco-friendly pods on the edge of Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Glynneath town five minutes’ drive; Four Waterfalls walk 15 minutes
  • Ensuite shower room and mini kitchen for each pod
The glamping accommodation at Waterfall Country Pods is just the ticket if you fancy a bit of luxury after exploring the forested hills and rocky mountains of the nearby Brecon Beacons National Park. Not only that: the self-contained woodland pods are carbon-neutral, so you can rest easy (on the comfortable beds, for which linen is provided), knowing that you’re doing your bit for nature, too. The wooden interior of the pods is designed to create a real cosy vibe. In addition to a separate bathroom with shower, there’s a cooking corner with a gas hob, kettle, fridge and a range of utensils, plates and cutlery. And because the owners take safety very seriously indeed, the pods also come with smoke alarms (no more burnt toast), fire extinguishers and carbon monoxide detectors. After consuming your meals (on the picnic table outside, if the weather allows), you can meet – and perhaps exchange hiking tips with – other guests at the communal washing-up area. There’s also a communal barbecue and firepit, if you wish to continue those hiking convos late into the night, under a canopy of stars… The site is a five-minute drive from Glynneath, a small town with supermarkets and restaurants, plus takeaway joints that deliver to the site; a little closer is the village of Pontneddfechan, which you can reach by bus or on foot in about 20 minutes – great news if you want to spend the evening in a traditional village pub without having to worry about a designated driver.

Local attractions

This corner of the Brecon Beacons is known as Waterfall Country, so you might want to pack your waterproofs (and/or swimming kit) before heading out to explore. Leave your car at the Four Waterfalls Car Park (15 minutes’ drive) for a walk along forested paths to dramatic cascades like Sgwd yr Eira, where you can walk behind the veil of water or take a dip in the pool. Rainy days are made for visits to places like Penderyn Distillery Visitor Centre (15 minutes), where you can stay dry and warm while sampling (and learning about, of course…) award-winning whiskies made right here in the Brecon Beacons. And at the end of the guided tour, you can hit the shop and buy a bottle or two. The name of the Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary (15 minutes) is a little reductive, because the animals here include foxes, meerkats, donkeys and more, in addition to primates like chimpanzees, macaques and capuchin monkeys. What they all have in common, though, is that they’ve all been rescued from unfortunate situations. At each enclosure, you can learn the stories of the animals within.
