  • Smart lodges just off the A5 in Snowdonia National Park
  • Walk to Betws-y-Coed in 10 minutes or Zip World Forest in half an hour
  • Well-equipped kitchens, lounges and private decks with hot tub
Luxury they promise in the name at Hendre Rhys Gethin Luxury Lodges, and luxury they certainly serve up in spades at this north Wales park. Each of the smart lodges at this Conwy site has been kitted out with all you need for a comfy, cosy stay: swish sofas, a fireplace and a TV for hours of loafing; handy bathroom bits including a hairdryer, and a well-equipped kitchen with washing machine and dishwasher (after all, who wants to wash up on hols?) The icing on the (Welsh) cake? A private deck with stunning views and a hot tub to wallow in while you take it all in. So, the digs are pretty fab – but what of the surrounds? Rather spectacular too, you’ll be chuffed to hear, for Hendre Rhys is in Snowdonia National Park and therefore within easy reach of thousands of mountain/lake/waterfall views (best remember to charge that camera battery), plus miles of walks and bike rides and other outdoorsy antics. Fancy skipping driving for the day? Several walks start from the site – including the stroll to Swallow Falls and the jaunt to the Zip World Fforest adventure park, both of which are a couple of miles away. A riverside ramble of 10 minutes or so leads to Betws-y-Coed for more walking routes, or for sustenance in the excellent collection of pubs, cafés and restaurants. If you’ve set your sights on the more far-flung corners of Snowdonia, it's handy to note that the A5 runs just past the park, and a train station and bus stops are in Betws-y-Coed.

Local attractions

Betws-y-Coed’s a great base for Snowdonia strolls – swing by the tourist office in town to pick up maps and advice on routes to suit your tastes. Hoping to bag a mountain peak or two while you're here? Head to Capel Curig (10 minutes' drive) for a trail to Tryfan, or drive 20 minutes to Pen-y-Pass for tracks to the summit of Snowdon. For alternative alfresco activities, take your mountain bike to the challenging trails of Gwydyr Forest Park, surf the waves at Adventure Parc Snowdonia or descend below surface to leap about in an old slate cavern at Bounce Below’s trampoline park; all are about a 20-minute drive away. Just outside Betws-y-Coed is Zip World Fforest (five minutes' drive), where you can zoom along ziplines, ride a twisty toboggan course and dangle from Europe’s highest swing. For a splash of sea air, it's around half an hour's drive to the elegant streets of Llandudno, the sands at Colwyn Bay or Conwy Castle, keeping watch over the estuary since the 13th century.
