  • Off-grid glamping site on a farm on the slopes of Hope Mountain
  • Half an hour’s drive from Chester and the North Wales coast
  • 20-acre setting with a field kitchen, barbecues and firepits
Why do people gravitate to Ty Uchaf Farm Glamping? For the stunning sunsets, starry skies, gorgeous views and peaceful wildlife, for sure. However, the location also leaves many hankering to return after they spend time getting to know historic Chester and the North Wales coast, which are both half an hour’s drive away. This is a place for off-grid glamping holidays and short breaks, tucked onto the slopes of Hope Mountain in the North Wales borders. The small farm base is surrounded by the Welsh countryside, with barbecues, firepits and 20 acres to its name. Plenty of space to explore? Tick. Low impact? Double tick: there’s solar and woodfired energy. The site is peaceful, green and refreshing, with attentive hosts. They created their two-acre glamping field from a meadow where the cows used to graze, and they leave parts of the grass long and wide hedgerows for native grasses, wildflowers and hedges to grow (minimising the visual impact and maximising the guests’ privacy). This all comes together to create a fab combo of comfort and wildlife. In the toilet shack, the shower has no roof (it’s been fondly named ‘The Sky’s the Limit Shower’, due to its position under the trees and open sky). Elsewhere, there’s a field kitchen with a gas hob, sink, food prepping space and spare supplies of firewood, charcoal and marshmallows. There are tables nearby to tuck in over views of Moel Famau, the tallest peak in the Clwydian Hills, as well as a sustainable greywater reed bed and pond. This takes all of the water from the sinks and showers and urine from composting toilets to turn it into fresh water for the pond

Ty Seren camping pod

Liked: We have stayed at one of two pods on site, and it was great. The site is rather small, meaning that there are only two camping pods and one bell tent, but owner, Robin, have designed llocations in really secluded manner, so you can still have your privacy. The views surrounding the site are just amazing. Pods are clean, same applies to the communal kitchen. There is a little wood burner inside pod, to stay warm even on the cold nights. Plus there is a place for bbq, fire pit. and an outside shower. Pod it self is spacious, with 2 little tables, and 4 chairs for inside or outside sitting.( please see photos attached). There is little chickens farm on the site where children so fond to play and checking their eggs:) Robin is a really great host, very welcoming and pleasant to have chat. He helped us a lot during our stay and was very helpfull - gave us tips on where and what to do, price list for local attractions etc. We felt very welcome and I am looking forward to bring my family back here. Location is great as well, as there are many different attractions surrounding the place, both indoors and outdoors. I would say this is a great holiday destination for both holidaymakers - the ones that want to just stay and chill by the fire, or the explorer type. Thank you Robin, and me and family look forward to come back again.

Disliked: Nothing really, but have to mention road up there is single lane, and some drivers might find it difficult. There are no regular electric plugs, only USB type of chargers inside pod. But I suppose you really want to get rid of your phone in such a secluded and peacefull place. PS. FYI toilet inside pod is a compost type of, meaning there is no water flush, its just a bag for you to do your 'business'. I didn't find that a problem, but maybe for some people a bit unusual/uncomfortable, so I thought of giving a heads up.

Liked: Don't hesitate to book, was amazing!!!! Comfy beds, spotlessly clean, perfect host, location and privacy is excellent!!!!

Disliked: Nothing

From the manager: Thanks for such a great recommendation Jayne - really enjoyed meeting and chatting with you. It's a perfect place for a spot of peace and quiet and we were so glad you could do a bit of a "recharge" here before getting back into the busy stuff of life. Also glad that you enjoyed the steaks from Swans Farm Shop - his meat his excellent (as well as his pies and cakes and sweets/treats!) Look forward to seeing you again, if you want to make us your regular "retreat"! We don't do wifi in the pods/tipi - but generally mobile network coverage is good at 4G (EE and Vodafone are the ones we have, not sure about others but no one has mentioned it before). If guests really have trouble with mobile signal and need to send/receive something important, we can always give them access to our own wifi on the farmyard.

Ty Coed camping pod

Liked: We stayed in Ty Coed & had a really wonderful time! Robin was super helpful with everything we needed and more than happy to help with anything and everything. Was very clean when we arrived, had everything we needed and even had some extra bits on the side! Our son loved being able to feed the chickens and go on the secret path back to the car! We were originally a little skeptical on the composting toilet, however it wasn't actually too bad! Would definitely stay again and would 100% recommend!

From the manager: Thanks for that lovely review - we enjoyed hosting you all. Thanks for the 100% recmmendation too - that makes us very happy. We love the composting loos, but were also sceptical til we built them. They are clean, water-free and sustainable. Our whole ethos is to create a low-impact holiday for our guests and the compost loos and grey-water reed bed are an important part of that, along with all our solar power. Would love to see you back - the chickens have grown!

Ty Coed camping pod

Liked: We had a great few days here over Easter staying in one of the pods. We arrived by public transport - the owner, Robin, kindly picked us up from Wrexham station which made it a lot easier, though it is possible to get buses to the nearby village (but a bit of a climb up the hill). We also got a supermarket delivery for our food. We had two decent walks from the site. We particularly liked the walk to Nant y Ffrith. The pod was comfortable and cosy. Robin was friendly and very helpful - he kept in touch by WhatsApp to make sure we had everything we needed every day. We enjoyed cooking meals on the barbecue with the charcoal provided. We made cups of tea in the covered shared kitchen area, and made meals there too when the weather was wet - sometimes the strong winds meant the kettle was slow to boil. The toilet and shower in the pod were fine and the mini-kitchen was well equipped. We used the indoor wood stove to heat the pod in the evenings - all the wood we needed was provided at the start.

From the manager: Hi Liz, Thanks so much for you 10/10 review - I am very glad you enjoyed your stay, and we were really grateful that as our first "non-car" guests you could test out things like public transport arrival and supermarket deliveries. It all seemed to work well - and we are keen to reduce the impact of guests' stays as far as possible. It was a shame that the weather was a bit mixed for some of your stay - but we could tell it didn't dampen your enthusiasm! I'll have a look at the gas hob in the Field Kitchen and see if I can improve the flame in windy weather - a quick cuppa is essential! Thanks again - we enjoyed meeting you all and would love to host you again...maybe in the tipi next time! Robin

Ty Mynydd tipi

Liked: I've stayed in many places all over the world and this is right up there and less than an hours drive from home. The peace hits you as soon as you turn the car engine off, wonderful views of the hills from the open field site, plenty of space and absolutely everything you need is all provided by the hosts. We stayed in the Beautiful teepee tent, very spacious, spotlessly clean and everything you need including a fridge. Listen to the Little owls calling at night if you can stay awake! Robin is the perfect host, thanks for a wonderful long weekend.

From the manager: Thanks Alex for such an amazing review - we’ve tried really hard to make it a comfortable stay but with a peaceful “back to nature” feel. Looks like we hit the spot for you guys! It was lovely to meet you and your kids - and thanks very much for identifying our resident owls as Little Owls. We’d love to see you again sometime - you can be sure of a very warm welcome.

Ty Mynydd tipi

Liked: What a fantastic few days at Ty Uchaf Farm. Absolutely stunning views and a great location. Our Tipi tent was magical, clean and spacious with everything you would need for a great glamping trip and more. We were warmly greeted by our host - Robin - upon arrival. He made sure we had everything we needed before we even asked! The marshmallows and milkshake from the local farm shop especially for our children was the icing on top!! Can't wait to return again really soon and would 100% recommend any family to stay at Ty Uchaf Farm Glamping :-) PS: Thank you for keeping the fire burning with all the wood supply inside and outside of the tent!

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (25 minutes) will surely take one of the top spots.
