  • Relaxed family-run working farm site in Snowdonia National Park
  • Excellent area for hillwalking; two seaside resorts within 10 miles
  • Bordered by a river; nearest pub four miles away in Bryncrug
Rock up to this place for a pitch among stunning Welsh countryside: the site is set in Snowdonia National Park and lies six miles outside the seaside resort of Tywyn on the Cardigan Bay coast. Spectacularly located under the site’s namesake of Craig yr Aderyn or Bird Rock, and with splendid views of the surrounding Cadair Idris massif and open countryside, Bird Rock Campsite is a quiet and relaxed family-run working farm, spaciously laid out over four grassy acres. As this site is scenically set in national parkland, there’s plenty of handsome countryside to roam around, as well as waymarked walking trails to tramp. The accommodation field is bordered by a little river that guests can idle beside, wade in and cast a rod into. There's no wifi or mobile phone signal here either… all the better for soaking up the peace and quiet… The site is consistently hailed by previous guests as being kept immaculately clean, and the owners oft lauded for their friendly and accommodating approach. For freshening up before or after your days of sightseeing and outdoorsy action, showers are available to use for a small fee, and a kettle and a washing machine are available over in the washing-up area for making hot drinks and sorting grubby togs. Also on site are Elsan waste points and electric hook-ups. If you need to keep supplies topped up for evening campfires, the nearest supermarket is around six miles away in Tywyn. Plenty of good local pubs serving food are around too; the nearest is two miles away in Abergynolwyn.

Please note
  • A charge of £0.50 applies for the use of the shower.
  • There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.
  • The roads to the farm are made up of narrow country lanes, so can be tricky to access for those with bigger vehicles. As a river is on site, children must be supervised at all times. Cold water is free but there is a 20p charge for hot water in the taps.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Been before, great solar heat shower and quite and friendly staff. After going at this time of year would only recommend going if you’re (1.) In a motorhome/campervan or (2.) In a caravan as the weather can be unpredictable and is at time unstable most tents

Electric grass tent pitch (five person)

Liked: The stream is beautiful, the kids loved paddling, swimming and skimming stones. Because the site is remote there is no light pollution and the stars are amazing, I'm pretty sure we saw the milky way whilst we were there, so beautiful. The toilet and showers were decent and clean, you do have to pay for them but the cost of the campsite more than compensates for this. Beautiful scenery, quiet and close to allot of hikes and walks.

Disliked: The site isn't very level unfortunately, we have a large tent so we were quite restricted to where we could pitch that was also close to the EHU. There are resident caravan owners, most are lovely but we did have a slight run in with one but it didn't ruin our weekend. This site is ideal for walkers and couples that want a quiet weekend however it wasn't fantastic for younger children. All that being said, this is just our opinion for our family.

Liked: The toilets were clean, the owners were friendly, the place is quiet, peaceful and off the beaten track. There is a supermarket a few miles away in town. It's a beautiful part of the world.

Disliked: The water in the river was too wet.

Electric grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked: What an idyllic setting. We parked close to the river under the trees, with stunning views of the hillsides and river. This is close to wild camping if it wasn't for the optional electric hookup. Zero mobile signal, no WiFi. Perfect! Very glad of the basic wash up and toilet facilities - personally we don't care if they're a bit run down as we're used to providing our own. Lovely lady owner, who was very friendly on arrival, and flamboyant site manager very accommodating allocating place to pitch up. Really welcoming.

Disliked: These reviews are personal and I realise these things wouldn't bother some people. To my mind the biggest issue is uncontrolled campsite users. There are permanent caravan setups on site with their regular weekend owners; dogs running free (including an excitable staffy) and partying past midnight. There just needs to be a strict dogs on leads and 11pm quiet time.

Liked: Views.

Disliked: Showers in toilet block luke warm and you have to pay 50p for the privilege. Facilities very limited. No phone or WiFi signal. Not the cleanest facilities. Loud guests on site no quiet time. Not great if wet, no drainage on entry to field.

Local attractions

The site’s spectacular Snowdonia National Park setting among the Cadair Idris massif means that scenic hill walks are on the menu, as well as cycling and mountain biking around Cregennan Lakes or along the Mawddach Trail. For sitting back and admiring Welsh seaside scenes, take the coastal line of the Talyllyn Railway from the seaside resort of Tywyn, six miles from base, to Shrewsbury or in the other direction to Porthmadog. If you’d rather stay put on the sands or try your hand at surfing, Tywyn's beach and waves are much recommended. For varied days off base, the subterranean slate cavern zipwiring park at Blaenau Ffestiniog is well worth the hour’s drive to, or closer to home there’s a laser shooting centre in Tywyn. An alternative (and rather more sedate) option is the Centre for Alternative Technology in Corris, where visitors can learn all about how to live a more sustainable life.
