  • Well-maintained family site just over a mile from Tywyn
  • In the Snowdonia National Park half an hour's drive from Dolgellau
  • Access to woodland walks and fishing on the Dysynni river
Calling all walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers, beachgoers… there's a lovely base for all of you at Ynysymaengwyn Caravan and Camping Park, in the grounds of a ruined old manor house in rural Gwynedd, just over a mile from Tywyn and its beach. This is a peaceful spot indeed for a break, as the pitches are surrounded by woodland where you can head out for walks (with your dog by your side if you’ve brought them along for the ride) or follow the orienteering course for a bit more of a challenge. There's also an adventure playground to keep the kids busy, plus access to the Dysynni river at the bottom of the site for anglers to fish for salmon and trout. This is a park that likes to keep things simple and relaxed rather than providing lots of entertainment, but it’s got all the essential facilities sorted including a launderette, an Elsan point and toilets and showers with accessible facilities. The location of the park is at the southern tip of the Snowdonia National Park and very close to the coast, so there’s no shortage of things to do – whether you’d like hardcore hiking or something rather more gentle. And you shouldn’t go hungry either, as Tywyn has a good collection of places to eat including cafés, chip shops, takeaways and restaurants. The town also has a supermarket and bakery if you’d rather sort your own meals back at base or pick up picnic bits.

Liked: The site was lovely it would have been even better if it wasn’t for the stinking rain which caused a lot of issues for the owners. I felt very bad for them, hopefully the weather will improve

Liked: We liked everything regarding our stay. Check in was nice and easy at reception, we could pitch up anywhere within reason, there was a pizza van on site which is a lovely idea. Hot showers in a heated toilet/shower block which are regularly cleaned and maintained. Couldn't have asked for more, would definitely return.

Liked: The campsite was beautiful. Surrounded by hills. The bathroom facilities were warm and clean and the showers were really warm. The lady on reception was really nice and really helpful. The site has lots of hidden gems. Lots of walks and wildlife. The weather had been very wet on the lead up to our stay which made the ground a bit boggy but there was someone on standby to help tow anyone that got stuck. It's a short walk to the ice cream shop up the road and not much further to the town. In the town there were places to eat, DIY shops and also a spar shop and large coop and a beautiful cinema. The beach front has a few cafes and an arcade for the kids. One night during our stay a pizza van came to the site and made pizzas to order. You could pay cash or card for these. There are multiple water outlet scattered around the site and plenty of electric points if that's what you have booked. We will definitely be returning in the future. One piece of advice for people in tents. Don't set up under the trees with nests. We started to set up in a lovely area and noticed the crows so moved.

Liked: Location good for walking to beach one way and hills the other. Friendly and welcoming hosts. The price is good. The shower has good water pressure and is lovely and hot. There was an ice cream van which did the rounds and a visiting mobile pizza wagon on the Saturday night, don't know of that's a weekly thing or a one off but a good idea.

Disliked: Quite a walk to nearest shop as no shop onsite for basics. The main road runs alongside, which seems to have a lot of road traffic. There appears to be a timer attached to toilet / shower block which goes out when you're just about finished with your shower so then stood in semi darkness getting dry and dressed.

Liked: Lovely staff that was happy to help clean toilet block lovely walls and loads to see even though it rain most of the time we was there

Disliked: Only thing I could say is that maybe summer time would of been better as it was really muddy most of the time with all the rain and the new park wasn’t open yet

Electric optional grass tent pitch (four person)

Liked: Good sized field with plenty of pitches and electric hook ups, toilets and showers were clean and a decent size but could possibly benefit from a floor squeegee to wipe the shower area down for when you get out of the shower as when we were there it was quite wet and muddy (not a major issue but may be useful) Staff were really helpful and friendly and even after “Rob” spent Good Friday pulling people out of the mud he was still very pleasant. Great views and not far from the local village if you needed supplies although they did have a pizza night on from an outside “pop-up” caterer on one of the nights. Even managed to get WiFi signal at the bottom end of the field Would definitely return here and hopefully have some drier weather next time

Disliked: Not so much a dislike but more of an opinion, the waste/skip area could maybe do with a few more signs directing you to it as we didn’t see it until we were leaving due to a large van parked in front of it. Main road at front can be a little noisy at night along with the nesting crows in the morning but this isn’t anything the campsite owners can do anything about and dosn’t really cause too much stress

Local attractions

As well as being your nearest source of food, Tywyn’s a great little seaside town with a sandy beach, miniature golf, pitch and putt and tennis courts. It’s also the starting point for the Talyllyn Railway, which runs into the countryside for a scenic ride – a particularly nice way to do it is to ride to Dolgoch and walk to its waterfall before a cuppa in the tea rooms. Walkers may like to set out on the Wales Coast Path or head inland for a wander along the shores of Tal-y-llyn lake (15 minutes’ drive), scramble up the slopes of Penygader (20 minutes) or head to the walking hub of Dolgellau (half an hour) to explore the trails around there. Mountain bikers, meanwhile, will no doubt want to tackle the trails of Coed-y-Brenin (45 minutes) while birdwatchers learn about the residents of Dyfi Osprey Project (half an hour). Once you’ve spent some time on the sands of Tywyn, head a little further along the coast to explore the dunes of Ynyslas Nature Reserve and see the petrified forest at Borth (both 45 minutes).
