  • Glamping 15 minutes’ drive from Cowbridge in Glamorgan
  • Monknash beach five minutes’ drive, and Dyffryn Gardens 25 minutes
  • Private bathrooms in a former stable; firepits and private kitchen
Luxury bell tents in South Wales wildflower meadows with peaceful surroundings sound like your sort of camping break? Step forward family-run (and family-friendly) Lower Monkton Glamping, five minutes’ drive from the hamlet of Broughton, and 15 minutes’ drive from Glamorgan’s historic Cowbridge. Set well apart from each other for maximum privacy on the camping meadow, the bell tents sleep up to four comfortably in proper double and single beds (with bed linen provided, along with towels and cooking and eating utensils), and have comfy armchairs for putting your feet up, as well as lantern lighting. Each has its own bathroom (in a converted stable) with hot showers and a flushing loo, and there’s also an individual camp kitchen with a gas hob and grill for alfresco feasts. Thoughtful touches include a welcome basket of local goodies, a firepit for barbecuing under the stars (listen out for the owls), and solar-powered phone/tablet chargers. A cool box and ice packs are also supplied to keep your food fresh and chilled. If you’d like to abandon your car on arrival and laze amid nature or explore all the country walks direct from your grassy pitch, do just that. The site owners are happy to take in food deliveries for you, and if you ever get lost or too tired on a walk, will find you and shuttle you safely back to base camp (remember to take your phone with you, just in case).

Bell tent

Liked: We felt so comfortable and welcome. The site was quiet and beautiful, with a full range of amenities. As it was rainy while we were there we enjoyed the seating area inside the tent for reading in the evening. The extra touches were really appreciated, including hot water bottles and a welcome basket. Gorgeous experience.

Bell tent

Liked: My family of 5 had a wonderful 3 night stay at Lower Monkton Glamping! The bell tent was set in a picturesque setting surrounded by tall wild grass and the sounds of nature. The option to camp with access to hot showers, cooking facilities and flushing toilets really appealed to us! All 3 children had all the freedom they could ever ask for! Nobody wanted to go home! Patrick and Hannah were fantastic hosts. We can't wait for next visit to Wales.

Local attractions

If it’s South Wales beaches you’re longing for, walk past streams and waterfalls to Monknash beach (five minutes’ drive or 40 minutes’ walk), backed by steep cliffs and with expanses of soft sand at low tide. As it takes a bit of getting there, you may have it to yourselves. Stroll to Nash Point (55 minutes) to investigate the historic lighthouse, or Dunraven Bay (an hour and 20 minutes) for swimming and surfing on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast. Back inland, the market town of Cowbridge (15 minutes’ drive) has a lively high street lined with independent shops and lots of dining options – ask the site owners for their recommendations. Cardiff (40 minutes) is the spot for a boat ride across the bay, a night out at the theatre or a potter around the 11th-century castle. Adding more culture to the mix, you might like to have wander around the landscaped gardens at National Trust-owned Dyffryn Gardens (25 minutes), before treating the kids to the vintage planes and WWII bombers at South Wales Aviation Museum (10 minutes) – also a smart idea for any rainy days.
