  • Peaceful adults-only site on a working dairy farm in the Wye Valley
  • A 15-minute drive from Tintern Abbey or Chepstow; 30 from Abergavenny
  • Half a mile to a food shop and pub; close to clay pigeon shooting
The folk at Keepers Lodge Caravan and Camping strive year-round to keep their dairy herd happy, but it's not all work and no play for guests staying at this working Wye Valley farm. Far from it – there's a clay pigeon shooting range next door and plenty of good times nearby if you take a stroll into the village of Llanishen, especially if you stop for drinks or bites at the local pub. The views around here are pretty splendid as well – valley vistas aplenty can be surveyed from this site, while the mooing of nearby cows should help make you feel all the more a part of the rural surrounds. Strolls around the farm are highly recommended: there's plenty of room to roam here, including tree-lined trails around Kennel Wood. There are also attractive wildflower meadows strewn about the grounds. Day trips near or far are a doddle at Keepers Lodge Caravan and Camping – pic-worthy places like Chepstow and Tintern Abbey can be reached in a quarter of an hour by car, with Abergavenny and the Brecon Beacons about half an hour away. That said, the chance to set up a barbecue may well tempt you to stick around to admire the views in the evening (as will handy features like free wifi and charging points for gadgets). Need provisions? Stroll half a mile down the road to the well-stocked village stores. Goodies like hot rolls and homemade cakes can also be bought at the clay pigeon shooting range.

Local attractions

If you're one to find peace when plonked by a pond, try Grange Springs Fishing Lakes (five minutes' drive), one of Monmouthshire's premium coarse fishing spots. There are lots of other ways to get your fill of fresh air while out this way if angling doesn't appeal, including hiking up to the ruins at Tintern Abbey (15 minutes), checking out Chepstow Castle (15 minutes) or rambling around Raglan Castle (20 minutes), a fab fortification built in the 1400s by the Blue Knight of Gwent. Monmouth Canoe Hire and Activity Centre (15 minutes) is also on hand for self-paddled jaunts, climbing or abseiling under the beady eye of expert instructors. Over the border in England, Symonds Yat (20 minutes) is only a little further along the Wye and is known for being one of the UK's best spots for seeing peregrine falcons in the wild. Daintier winged things, meanwhile, can be seen at Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo (20 minutes).

Heather electric gravel touring pitch

Liked: People were friendly, handy location for the area we were visiting.

Disliked: Caravan pitch was poor. View of an agricultural shed. Not a place to visit if looking for a visually pleasing caravan pitch. Woken up by farmers 2000w floodlight when he decided to turn it on at night. Noise of machinery running throughout the night didn’t help either. Working farm but not recommended for caravans. Tent pitches were much better and had a good outlook

From the manager: We are sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your recent stay with us. As you correctly stated in your review, we are a working dairy farm, which is stated on Pitchup and explained by myself upon our guests arrival. However, we don't have machinery running through the night, in fact apart from the odd sound of an animal in the night we are well known for how quiet the farm is. I can only presume that you are referring to the hum of the milking parlour, which usually starts around 4.30-5.00am, but we have never had comment made on this by our previous guests. With respect to being woken up by a floodlight, I'm sorry if this disturbed you, but it is not turned on us by as it is a motion sensor security light, which comes on when people pass. It provides light for guests making their way around the site during the hours of darkness. Again our apologies that your stay with us was not as expected.

Shower was nice and hot, and regularly cleaned
