  • Quiet hillside rural site overlooking the Amman Valley
  • A 20-minute drive from Carreg Cennen Castle; walking routes nearby
  • Views over the Amman Valley; town centre five minutes’ drive
Raring to go for a rural stay that will help you to unwind? Then, Scotch Pine Inn may be a good port of call. A quiet hillside spot, this site overlooks the Amman Valley, so traffic-free riverside trails and mountain hikes are very much on the cards around here. The site sits up high in a field, so there are scenic views over the countryside. In fact, the only disturbance is from the sheep and bird song, so it’s likely that you’ll find this quite a peaceful place to get in a good sleep or some downtime with a book or binoculars. Those of you who are keen to tackle the local trails will be pleased to hear that there are plenty of walks on your doorstep. The site is also 15 minutes’ drive away from the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, where mountains (and some caves) are the speciality. Despite the quiet around, you won’t have to go on quite as much of a trek to find the local amenities, as the centre of Ammanford has a wide assortment of shops, restaurants and pubs five minutes’ drive away from the site.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Fantastic spot after a lovely drive over the remote mountain top with wind turbines. Isolated, quiet and peaceful spot for our mobile home. Has power, water and chemical disposal, and a lovely host. Would be happy to return again and recommend to others. Level pitches covered with gravel.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Pleasant hillside views

Disliked: Site is a narrow ledge at the foot of a high bank. Difficult to turn around, even with a 6 metre van. Had to leave campsite and climb steep hill to garden of former inn to empty black waste into owner's inspection chamber.

Liked: Not much to be honest

Disliked: No toilet, pub shut down. To be fair it's in the small print and I didn't read it until after I'd booked.

Local attractions

Coast, cave and castles… these three are part of the cocktail in this area of land. The local castles, including Carreg Cennen Castle (20 minutes’ drive) and Dinefwr Castle (half an hour) won’t let you miss out on a good dose of Welsh history. The same can be said for the National Showcaves Centre for Wales (40 minutes), as the dinosaur park, museum, gold panning activities and Iron Age farm open up a fair few pages in the history books. As for that coast that Wales is so well-known for, the Gower Peninsula (45 minutes) keeps some of the cleanest beaches and cool coastal path stretches, as it’s an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Then, Swansea (half an hour) has a little more of the traditional seaside life with surfing on the beaches and shopping in the city. It’s not just about the three Cs, though. There’s a waterfall at Henrhyd Falls (40 minutes) for a handsome hike, a load of plant life in the National Botanic Garden of Wales (25 minutes) and walking, cycling and mountain biking in Llyn Llech Owain Country Park (20 minutes).
